How about a little species spotlight?

Native huckleberry is a very common sight in the southeast, but they can vary quite a bit. Today I saw three species all growing within a few feet of each other. All of these are very common in the shaded woodlands of the southeast. They readily bounce right back after fire. They provide fruit for a multitude of migratory songbirds, as well as eastern wild turkey and northern bobwhites. Deer use varies by region and other herbaceous species availability, but can be browsed heavily in areas.

First is Vaccinium stamineum, or deer berry.

Second is Vaccineum arboreum, or tree sparkleberry.

The third is Vaccineum elliottii, or Elliott’s huckleberry. This is by far the most delicious.

A quick walk around a unit that was burned in March reveals heavy usage by deer on several forbs and vines. One unit was treated in October of 2025 with imazapyr at 16 oz per acre to control sweetgum and Chinese privet. The fire was conducted in early March.
Look at the browse on common ragweed, two species of goldenrod, peppervine etc.

Also, the bare ground between plants allows easy travel of turkey poults underneath the vegetation, yet growth is not too high for the adult hens to see above and detect danger.
