Founded in 1853 by Captain Richard King along Santa Gertrudis Creek in South Texas, King Ranch has grown from a small cow camp into one of the largest and most respected agricultural operations in the United States. Now spanning 825,000 acres in Texas, the Ranch's legacy continues through the dedication of the King Ranch family and the Kineรฑos, with interests in ranching, farming, wildlife conservation, technology, retail, and more.

For more than 170 years, the Running W brand has represented excellence in cattle production and horsemanship. Every King Ranch cowboy still works from the saddle of a horse descended from the foundation sire Old Sorrel, whose influence remains central to the Ranch's Quarter Horse program. Bred for strength, agility, stamina, and intelligence, these horses continue to meet the demanding needs of South Texas ranch work while improving the productivity of the Ranch's commercial cattle operations.

The careful selection and preservation of these bloodlines has also produced some of the most influential horses in AQHA history, including Wimpy, Rey Del Rancho, Mr. San Peppy, and Peppy San Badger. Since implementing a renewed breeding strategy in 2013, the program has continued to build on this legacy, highlighted by Coronel Del Rancho's 2021 AQHA World Championship and multiple appearances at The Run for a Million Cowboy Invitational with Division Manager Lee Roy Montalvo.

At this year's Return to the Remuda Sale, buyers will have the opportunity to own horses from the next generation of King Ranch Quarter Horses.
