Is Hiring Back a Former Employee the Right Decision?

When you’re looking to fill an open position, and a former employee applies, it can feel like an easy answer. Hire them, right? They already know the company culture, the nuances of the business nuances, and the people. But defaulting to a "boomerang" employee may be a mistake. To assess the situation carefully and make the right choice, ask yourself these questions.
Does the boomerang bring the right skills and capabilities? Just because they had what it took before they left the company, doesn’t mean they’ll be equipped to meet today’s expectations. Carefully assess whether their current skills and experience match the job description.
Do I think this is the easiest option? You may think the boomerang doesn’t need much onboarding, especially if they’re returning to the same team. But companies, teams, and processes grow and change, and this employee deserves the same amount of ramp time as any new one.
Will I be able to retain them long term? There was a reason they originally left. Have an honest conversation about what they’re looking for, why this role could be fulfilling for them (where the other one wasn’t), and what it will take to keep them engaged.

Keep Your Meetings on Track
Everyone appreciates a meeting that’s run efficiently. To stick to a schedule and make the best use of everyone’s time, start by planning your talking points. Ask yourself questions like: What ideas do I want to raise in this meeting? What problems do we need to solve? What questions do I most want this group to discuss and consider? At the start of the meeting, lay out what exactly needs to be decided, reviewed, or accomplished. Avoid vague verbs like “exploring” or “addressing” that promise talk, not action. Give the team a preview of what will be covered so they know what to expect and can follow along. Throughout the meeting, keep detours brief. When a tangential idea arises, even if it’s a good one, consider whether it’s the right meeting to discuss it. If not, steer the meeting back toward your agenda, and follow up later about the unrelated idea. Finally, end on an actionable note. Decide who’s doing what next and when.

Take a Vacation the Right Way
You plan a vacation to relax, rejuvenate, and forget all about work. But being out of the office often means doing a mountain of extra work before and after, so your supposedly relaxing time off can actually exacerbate your stress. How do you avoid this problem? Before your vacation, overcommunicate and delegate. Make a prioritized list of tasks that need to be done during your time off and establish a hand-off process for each one, coordinating with anyone who will be filling in while you’re away. Then send out advanced notice of your vacation to anyone who might be impacted so they’re all aware of how long you’ll be gone and who to go to in your absence. During your vacation, set an intention: are you trying to relax, learn about a new culture, or connect with friends and family? Think of this intention as your only job during your time off — and give yourself permission to unplug from work so you can focus on achieving it. Finally, when you return from vacation, take the first thirty minutes of your first day back to make a list of priorities, ideally before you open your inbox. Then tackle your new to-do list one-item at a time. Remember: you deserve a restorative vacation. You don’t deserve additional stress for taking it.
