As a dietetic intern, I learned that private practice is more than just business…it’s a journey of self-discovery, service, and strategy.
Even when you don’t have all the answers, keep going. Make adjustments, try new approaches, and trust that over time, you’ll create a path that fits you.
During my rotation, my incredible preceptor taught me that success starts with planning and discipline.
Here are a few lessons that deeply resonated with and I believe they’ll serve any future intern well:
🗓️ Plan your days. “Find a calendar or planner you actually enjoy using so you look at it daily. Schedule everything including your lunchtime and self-care.”
🥗 Prep your meals. Life gets busy! Bringing your lunch ensures you always have something nourishing during the day.
☀️ Make time for you. Whether it's an early morning workout, prayer, journaling, or quiet time, be intentional about doing what fills you up.
🤝 Nurture connection. Your loved ones, friends, mentors because these relationships keep you grounded.
📚 Stay curious. Never stop learning. Every day brings new knowledge and growth.
💖 Pay it forward. Share what you know. Uplift others. It truly makes an impact.
💫 Most importantly: Give yourself grace and keep going. The learning never stops, and that’s the beauty of this profession.
To future interns: This experience reminded me that being a dietitian isn’t just about food, it’s about building systems, routines, and habits that help you and others thrive. I’m beyond grateful to be learning from mentors who lead with both heart and high standards.
