Every app, every platform, every tool that keeps UMS running smoothly? It starts here. Meet our Software Development team: Juan, Caroline, Jacob, Will, Hyun, Stepan, Rick, and Steve! 👋

This team is responsible for designing and maintaining the core software that powers our utility operations from the ground up. Their work connects field staff and office teams, keeping everyone on the same page no matter where the job takes them.

What sets them apart? They don't just write code — they solve real problems. From building accessible, data-driven platforms that streamline work orders to improving how we track company resources, the Software Development team takes complex technical requirements and turns them into tools that are actually easy to use. Five and a half years in, Brandon Abelseth has worn two hats and worn them well serving as both Project Coordinator and QA/QC Manager.

If you know Brandon, you know food isn't just a hobby: it's practically a language. So it might raise an eyebrow to learn that this culinary enthusiast has absolutely no shame about a late-night Taco Bell run. Zero. He'll be the first to admit it, and somehow that just makes him more likeable.

When it comes to dream travel, Brandon is torn between two versions of perfect. One has him standing on the first tee at the Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland, the birthplace of golf, wrapped in centuries of history and breathtaking scenery. The other has him stepping out of a cavern hotel in Santorini, Greece, to the Aegean Sea stretching out to the horizon. "To wake up and walk out to absolute paradise — what more can you ask for?" That one has been on his list for over a decade.

The best advice Brandon ever received? "You can't rewrite what's already happened, but you can decide what it means and what you do next. What really counts is how you use it — whether you let it weigh you down or turn it into momentum." It's a mindset that shows in the way he works and the way he carries himself.

For fellow foodies, he recommends Anthony Bourdain's A Cook's Tour, a world-spanning hunt for the "perfect meal" through Vietnam, Russia, Mexico, France, and beyond. Brandon hopes to do exactly that himself someday.

His goal for the year is straightforward and deeply personal: keep growing within UMS and provide for his kids to the best of his ability. And what keeps him coming back? "The overall family mentality of this company." After five and a half years, that feeling hasn't faded one bit.
