Meet Jacob, Leonard, Tanner, Robi, Matt, Jim, Nick, Shane, and Tyree — the people who show up every single day and get it done, no matter what the weather, the worksite, or the circumstances look like.

Field Service Managers are the backbone of every deployment we run. They're on the ground making critical decisions in real time, keeping crews on track, and making sure every meter, every endpoint, and every install meets the standard our clients expect. But they're also so much more than that.

These nine are the most important link between our clients and our corporate team. They carry the relationship. They carry the accountability. When something needs to get done — or fixed, or figured out — they're the ones who make it happen.

✨ Employee Spotlight: Ernie Machia ✨

Four years in and still going strong — Ernie Machia brings the kind of steady, purposeful energy to his role as Project Manager that you don't stumble into by accident. It's built over a lifetime.

Before managing projects at UMS, Ernie was managing something just as demanding: feeding soldiers as a cook in the Army. It's the kind of background that teaches you to stay calm under pressure, work with what you've got, and show up for the people counting on you — lessons that clearly stuck.

If he could have any superpower, Ernie wouldn't hesitate: healing. And he'd use it every single day. That answer says a lot about the kind of person he is — someone who leads with care and thinks about others first.

When it comes to dream travel, Ernie has one destination in mind: Spain, with his wife. "It seems very romantic," he says simply — and honestly, that's reason enough.

If he could sit down to dinner with anyone from history, he'd choose President Abraham Lincoln, and he'd ask him one question: What does servant leadership mean to you? It's a question that reveals just as much about the person asking it as it does about Lincoln.

The best advice Ernie ever received? "Coach for positivity." It's short, but it's a philosophy — one that shapes how he leads, how he communicates, and how he shows up for his team every day.

For colleagues looking for a meaningful read, he recommends Lead… for God's Sake! by Todd G. Gongwer, a leadership parable that has clearly resonated with how Ernie thinks about his own role as a leader. His goal for the year is a bit more personal: break 80 on the golf course. We're rooting for him.

And what keeps him coming back to UMS? "Leadership was not afraid to take a chance on me." Four years later, it's safe to say that chance paid off — for everyone.
