Here in New Orleans, Mardi Gras celebrations abound! The revelry, the costumes, parades and balls are weekend events that everyone looks forward to.

What has always fascinated me are the masks! They come in all shapes and sizes, made with beads, sequins, feathers and a host of other materials. Designed to attract, camouflage and increase the mystery and allure of the wearer. While masks add a certain dramatic flair to the festivities, they also increase the potential danger should the wearer be unscrupulous or have a criminal intent. Why? Because you can't identify the person behind the mask or determine possible intent based upon a historical record.

A background check is like looking behind the mask of a person to uncover what's hidden. Just as a mask can conceal a person's true identity, someone's public image can hide their past actions and behavior. A background check peels back that mask to reveal any criminal records, financial history, or other important information that may impact a person's (or company's) suitability for a deal and introduce potential risks that should be considered in strategic decisions as you move forward with a potential transaction. aVeriFact's reports detail the facts behind the mask based upon the results of an examination of multiple database sources, cross-referenced against public records at the local, state and federal levels, further compared to online, media and social media findings to ensure accurate, current, verified facts.

"A backlog of 14,000 users requiring enhanced due diligence".

"New York financial regulators have found that the popular cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase violated anti-money laundering laws by failing to conduct adequate background checks. Coinbase will pay a $50 million fine to the New York State Department of Financial Services, and is also required to spend $50 million on improving its compliance program."

Background checks come in all shapes, sizes and price points. Not doing a background check as part of your customer onboarding can be far more costly than the price doing a background check that properly addresses the level of risk you are interested in identifying and taking steps to mitigate in the business relationship. $50 million can go a long way to obtaining basic database screenings to more comprehensive background investigations utilizing multiple database sources, direct investigation of public records at the Local, State and Federal levels, with online and media searches for greater accuracy.

The moral of the story? Invest in due diligence now or pay the price later.

"5 Ways To Do Due Diligence For Third-Party Vendors" provides a good overview of basic due diligence. What is missing are Background checks!

Third Party Vendor Due Diligence emphasizes physical security and cybersecurity evaluations. What is missing are common sense measures to identify potential risks by utilizing background checks on Key individuals (owners, executives, decision makers) or on the company itself.

After all, you are considering entrusting the assets and information of your company, employees and customers to a third party. Doesn't it make sense to properly evaluate the risks involved with the people in charge and the entity itself?

Relying on an online search (or single database provider) to determine factors such as reputation, financial stability, legal concerns, etc is like looking for needle in a haystack. You wind up with a ton of information that may not even be applicable or current to your specific third party!

Database searches provide information reported from various sources to the specific database, but doesn't guarantee that ALL available information is current, correct or noted by the database at all. Often, a "no find" means nothing has been reported to that database, not that it doesn't exist elsewhere!

Conducting an in-depth background search utilizing multiple database sources; with direct investigation into public record sources in the appropriate jurisdictions (Local, State and Federal), as well as social media and adverse media are necessary to cross reference and verify the accuracy of the initial database findings as well as information not reported to ANY database at all.

A look at Civil (open & closed cases) can provide insight into litigation that is in progress or has been settled in lieu of suit, such as a history of Breach of Contract situations. Criminal history, litigation, suits and judgments are pertinent to reputation as well. "Googling" won't get you the full picture that a background investigation will yield. After all, a thorough background check will often include the Exhibits that add context to the findings that a list on a database won't show.

By utilizing investigators and analysts to review all findings from a wide range of sources, Background checks provide greater accuracy than a single database or online search. It also provides a benchmark for any changes that may take place during the course of the contract.

Trust, but verify! It's more than technology, it's the people and the organization as well. Due diligence should cover human capital as well as IT processes and procedures.

Sheri and I are to have the team we have at aVeriFact! Without them, aVeriFact wouldn't have the impact on the success of our clients' that we have today. It's their , their and their to do what is necessary to search for and report, to our clients facts that they've through a myriad of regardless of or timeframe.

Their choice of gifts (including flowers and yummy goodies to share) shows that they appreciate what we've built together as company since our opening in 2015. "Tough Times Don't Last, Tough Teams Do!" Couldn't be more appropriate for this point in time as we've all dealt with unexpected challenges due to lockdowns from a pandemic, economic shifts impacting our clients and thus our company, that as a small business requires that we all work together to succeed.

People talk about the value of culture in a company, ours is defined by our people.
