My son Ethan Brown and his buddy Chip Sloop (Beavis and Butt Head as I like to call them) and myself milled up this GORGEOUS black walnut today. We cut it on my Lucas 76” dedicated slabbing mill. This log was way too big for the Woodmizer. It came from a farm up in Wibar NC. It’s not mine, but I enjoyed sawing it. This is the biggest black walnut (diameter wise) that I’ve ever seen. Well, it’s been 6 years since I started Willow Ridge Portable Sawmilling & Custom Lumber. Since then, I’ve basically only been able to work when it wasn’t pouring rain. I’ve worked in drizzle, sleet, blowing snow, and out in the hot summer sun. It’taken a lot of dreaming, planning, work, time and money, but, I finally have a shed to work under. I am so thankful. Walls are next.

Wormy, ant infested, half rotten maple is some beautiful stuff. This belongs to a customer that brought me a hollow maple log. The funny thing is that if he took this log and tried to sell it to a commercial sawmill, they wouldn’t have even unloaded it, much less pay anything for it. Commercial mills are looking for blemish free. The closer to perfect, the more they will pay….up to a point. However, the slab tops in the picture can make a table that sells for thousands of dollars, much, much more than a perfect maple log this size would ever be worth. I got to pondering on that, and I realized that people are this way as well. We strive to be the so called “perfect”. We want the perfect houses, the perfect cars, the perfect jobs, the perfect financial conditions and the perfect families. But, under our bark there blemishes. Everyone has them. Everyone has problems. Maybe we need to stop and be thankful for the blemishes. For that is where true beauty/perfection can be found.

I lose sleep over this. I’ve worked through four winters without a shed to work under. When I finally get to a point to build it, the monsoons begin.

Here is secret I’ve been saving since April 2021. I got an opportunity to buy a slabbing saw that had only 15 hrs on it. I bought it and it’s been in my shed for a year and a half. One of my old friends (H.S. Greene) call me a couple of weeks ago wondering if I could cut some big logs. I thought this would be a great opportunity to try the slabbing mill out. This mill has a clear cut of 76” and will cut over 20’ long. The video is my self and my right hand man(Dean Hobbs) sawing a big forked maple. This tree is 72” wide at the widest point. We had just hit a nail before this cut, hence the need to go slow. Even with a dull chain, the mill did a great job.
