Wormy, ant infested, half rotten maple is some beautiful stuff. This belongs to a customer that brought me a hollow maple log. The funny thing is that if he took this log and tried to sell it to a commercial sawmill, they wouldn’t have even unloaded it, much less pay anything for it. Commercial mills are looking for blemish free. The closer to perfect, the more they will pay….up to a point. However, the slab tops in the picture can make a table that sells for thousands of dollars, much, much more than a perfect maple log this size would ever be worth. I got to pondering on that, and I realized that people are this way as well. We strive to be the so called “perfect”. We want the perfect houses, the perfect cars, the perfect jobs, the perfect financial conditions and the perfect families. But, under our bark there blemishes. Everyone has them. Everyone has problems. Maybe we need to stop and be thankful for the blemishes. For that is where true beauty/perfection can be found.
