Investing Early with Head Start
When we talk about breaking cycles of poverty and giving every child a fair shot, we have to start at the very beginning. The first five years of a child's life shape everything that comes after: their readiness for school, their sense of security, their belief in what's possible for them. Yet too many families face that critical window without the resources or support they need.
That is why this month's Mission Matters spotlight is on Head Start, the nationwide program dedicated to preparing our youngest children, and their families, for lasting success.
Why This Matters to Me
I've spent years overseeing Head Start as part of my work at Douglass Community Services, so I've seen firsthand what this program makes possible. It isn't just early childhood education. It's a whole-family approach built on the belief that when children and parents are both supported, entire communities are stronger for it.
Head Start takes care of the whole child and the whole family:
📌 Early Learning That Lasts: Head Start provides free, high-quality early childhood education for children from birth to age five, building the foundational skills kids need to walk into kindergarten ready to succeed.
📌 Health and Development Support: Every child receives health, dental, vision, and developmental screenings, connecting families to services early so small concerns don't become bigger barriers later.
📌 Family Engagement and Stability: Head Start supports parents too, connecting families to housing resources, job training, and parenting support, because a child's success is tied to their family's stability.
How You Can Help
Supporting Head Start doesn't require a checkbook, though that helps too. It relies on a community showing up in every way it can.
You can volunteer to read a book aloud to a classroom. You can help our center spruce up its outdoor play space with some fresh mulch or a coat of paint. Or you can offer your business's expertise (resume workshops, financial literacy sessions, or job-readiness trainings) for Head Start parents working toward their own next steps. And if you're able, a financial gift helps us stretch already-tight budgets to cover the extras: new books, playground equipment, family emergency support, that make the biggest difference. Let's give every child in our community the strong start they deserve!
