This is the official page of the Town of Hanson Massachusetts Fire Department. We are a combination department with 18 full-time professional firefighter paramedics and a supplementing paid-on-call department with 7 members. The town of Hanson is a 15.7 sq mile town about 18 miles south of Boston, with a growing population of about 11,000 our department responds to approximately 2200 calls of serv

Last week, the Hanson Fire Department brought the Kids Safety House to Indian Head School. Every single class and grade went through this hands-on curriculum, walking away with critical, life-saving fire safety skills.

The Safety House is a mobile simulator featuring a kitchen, living room, and bedroom designed to teach survival in a realistic environment. We can even completely "smoke out" the house to simulate real, zero-visibility fire conditions.

Throughout the week, students learned to navigate:
🔥 Hazard Recognition: Spotting oven fires, faulty electrical cords, and fireplace dangers.
🚪 Heat Checks: Testing bedroom doors for heat before opening them.
💨 Smoke Conditions: Crawling low to escape our safe, simulated smoke.
🪜 Emergency Exits: Using an escape ladder from a second-story deck.

This essential training is entirely funded through state SAFE grant money. We are proud to equip Hanson’s youngest residents with the knowledge and muscle memory they need to act fast in an emergency.

Earlier today, Hanson Fire Department crews responded to a motor vehicle crash on Monponsett St (Rt 58).

Upon arrival, crews located a single vehicle that had rolled over after striking a parked landscape trailer. The vehicle's sole occupant was able to exit the vehicle and was evaluated by EMS on scene, but refused further medical care. No other injuries were reported.

Rt 58 was temporarily closed while crews secured the scene and the vehicle was safely removed.

Today, the Hanson Fire Department observed Firefighter Memorial Sunday, a solemn tradition to honor the brave individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

We held a special moment of reflection for our own fallen heroes from Hanson: Firefighter James Craig, Firefighter Thomas Lovett, and Firefighter A. David Grindle. Their courage and dedication will never be forgotten. A special thank you to Paul Weller for a beautiful and moving performance of Taps during the ceremony. We were honored to have the Chair of the Selectboard, Laura FitzGerald-Kemmett, in attendance to join us in this tribute.

Following the memorial, we had the privilege of celebrating the incredible commitment of those who continue to serve our community. Congratulations to Lieutenant Keith Wilson and Firefighter Sean Gerraughty on receiving their 25-year service pins, with special thanks to State Representative Ken Sweezey for joining us to present these well-deserved honors.

We also proudly recognized our Administrative Assistant, Annmarie Bouzan, for her hard work, dedication, and invaluable service to the fire department.

Thank you to all who stood with us today to remember the past and honor those who keep our community safe.

We also want to thank The Meadow Brook Restaurant for providing the refreshments after the ceremony.

Pleasant Street Train vs. Truck Collision

Hanson Fire responded alongside Hanson and Transit Police Department to a train vs. vehicle collision at the Pleasant Street crossing.

Our primary ambulance was already tied up on a previous call at the hospital, a Pembroke Fire ambulance was requested. Our own ambulance was able to clear the hospital and respond back to the scene shortly after.

The driver of the truck and the train engineer were both transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Traffic Note: Pleasant Street will remain closed for a period of time while the investigation is completed and the scene is cleared. Please continue to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.

🇺🇸 Remembering and Honoring Our Heroes This Memorial Day 🇺🇸
Today, the members of the Hanson Fire Department pause to observe Memorial Day, a sacred time to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.
We owe an unpayable debt of gratitude to the courageous service members who laid down their lives to protect our freedoms and our way of life. Their selflessness, bravery, and unwavering dedication to a cause greater than themselves will never be forgotten.

As we spend time with family and friends this weekend, let us keep the fallen and their loved ones in our thoughts and hearts.

We encourage our community members to join local veterans, civic organizations, and neighbors at the town's Memorial Day services to collectively honor Hanson's own heroes.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HANSON — Hanson Police Chief Michael D. Casey and Fire Chief Robert O’Brien regret to report that the Hanson Police and Fire Departments responded to a fatal incident involving a vehicle crashing into a building on Monday afternoon.

Rescuers were dispatched to 481 High St., a single family house, at 6:22 p.m. Monday. Upon arrival, Hanson Police Officers and Firefighters located a Chevrolet pickup truck that had rolled over onto the driver’s side and crashed through a bay window in front of the home.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was unconscious and trapped inside the vehicle, and firefighters immediately began extrication efforts.

After a lengthy extrication involving hydraulic rescue tools, the driver, 58-year-old Hanson man, was removed from the vehicle and transported by ambulance to Brockton Hospital, where he later died.

The driver’s name is not being released at this time, pending notification of next-of-kin.

High Street is projected to remain closed well into the evening hours on Monday. The crash is under investigation by the Hanson Police Department and State Police Detectives Assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS).

🚨 Event and Traffic Advisory 🚨

The Hanson Police Department has been advised of a potentially large-scale event at St. Joseph the Worker Church on Maquan Street on Monday, 5/18/26.

The funeral for John Bernard Arnold III, a WWII Navy Veteran, will take place at 11:00 AM. In anticipation of the Veterans Agent’s Call to Action and a large number of attendees, please be aware of the following traffic and parking information:

• Maquan Street (Route 14), between School Street and Indian Head Street, will be CLOSED beginning at 9:30 AM for the duration of the event.

• Church doors will not open prior to 10:00 AM.

• Designated parking locations:
Botieri Field – 777 Indian Head Street
Former Maquan School – 38 School Street

• No parking will be permitted along roadways or in non-designated areas.

• Please be advised that all parking locations will require walking to the church. Assistance crossing roadways will be available.

• Law Enforcement/Military staging will be located behind 795 Indian Head Street (Hanson Highway Department).

We respectfully ask all attendees to be courteous to the surrounding neighbors, follow all posted guidelines, and comply with directions from law enforcement personnel on scene.

As part of our commitment to keeping the Town of Hanson informed, we are sharing our year-to-date emergency response statistics. Our call volume continues to see a significant increase, particularly regarding overlapping emergencies.

The Reality of Simultaneous Calls:
When two or more 911 calls occur at the same time, department resources are stretched to their limit.
• Last Year’s Gap: In 2025, simultaneous calls left the town without an available on-duty firefighter/paramedic 46% of the time.

Having adequate personnel on duty is critical to closing this gap. When an ambulance is already out of town on a transport to the hospital, having additional staffing ensures we still maintain a dedicated emergency presence right here in Hanson. Furthermore, this isn't just about EMS availability. Additional personnel puts more firefighters on the scene during the crucial first few minutes of an initial fire response, the most "make-or-break" period for life safety and fire control, bringing our department's capabilities closer to recognized NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) safety standards.

Year-to-Date Stats (as of today):
• Total Calls: 901 (Up 16.4% from 774 at this time last year)
• Simultaneous Calls: 454 (Up 24.7% from 364 at this time last year)

Currently, over 50% of all emergency responses in Hanson this year have been simultaneous incidents. We remain dedicated to providing the highest level of service possible as we manage these increasing volumes.
