Okay, so this news makes me take pause and say - maybe I was wrong in the post on Monday about Honeywell's Anthem. Gogo's work on 5G Inflight Connectivity seems to show that it can be used by aircraft without concern for range limitations. This plants the foundation for autonomous BVLOS operations in the future.

Air racing helped the legacy aviation industry gain public acceptance and excitement. These eVTOL air races will help do the same...but need to include in air vehicle crews to provide more connection with those that will be flying in the UAM and RAM vehicles. Still impressive work on creating this first of it's kind racing environment. Transport Up hits the big items that make this event important to the AAM industry, but it's worth a "foot stomp" that this type of work, like the technology advancements that took men to the moon, will be extensible to the commercial industry in the near future.

Honeywell's Anthem already on Lilium and Vertical products sets a bar for other avionics. Integrating offboard, high data-rate comms and flight planning on these platforms may drive a standard in the industry. Some issues that need to be investigated is the limited range for 5G comms - though not as problematic for UAM operations as regional flights. This is a good fit for Supernal and the SA-1 UAM vehicle.

Honeywell's cloud-based integrated flight deck allows pilots to access data and software online and should also support a transition to autonomous flight.

Some excellent numbers that put the challenge of UAM operations into perspective. Infrastructure as well as aircraft are needed. And that infrastructure is not only charging stations (or hydrogen fuel depots) as noted by this quick read. Excellent summation! Perhaps an investigation of locating new green energy near the need would be something that needs to be planned for along with vertiports.

EHang isn't the only Chinese AAM company flying these days. XPENG AEROHT has debuted its X2 eVTOL in Dubai. The Chinese market is getting crowded, but with these more visible and international demonstrations, they are making strong cases for their products and market strength.

Asia continues to have an expansion of its AAM OEM base with the entry of Plana. This company now has the funding to begin development of a prototype 5 seat (1 pilot/4 passenger) hybrid VTOL. The range will make is a good competitor in the S. Korean region, if it can move forward with full development and gain the necessary investment to complete certification. They have a long way to go...and the market beginning to show the signs of consolidation. Not sure this company can last very long in this environment.

Had a great second day attending the AAM focused panels on key topics of Airspace Integration, and Infrastructure Requirements. Spoke with Supernal, Wisk, Jaunt Air, ZeroAvia, Transcend Air, Electra, and Honeywell UAM/UAS. The excitement is building and the commitment to the future is there. AAM is here to stay!

More flight tests in Europe might not seem like big news...but in this case, manned flight tests is a big step. Volocopter conducted it's first manned demo in South Korea last year. But integrating into the European airspace control and new vertiport constructs is measurably moving the needle forward for AAM. Congrats and keep going!

The AAM industry continues to get strong support. Clean Aviation Joint Union is a public-private partnership supporting development of technologies that will allow for sustainable aviation's significant impact on the climate by 2050. Totaling $680 million (700 million euro) the investment expects to launch new projects after grant preparation later this year.

The announcement of an EH216 flight in a simulated multi-UAV airspace is not as extraordinary as it sounds. Other demonstrations have been demonstrating real UAM aircraft, UAS' and manned aircraft flying in the same airspace. It is still a good incremental step, and being conducted under European scrutiny adds credence to EHang’s Chinese certification. Still there are many more elements and much more review of the EH216 before it can be considered a viable product in the European or US market.

The ultimate goal is to perform large-scale demonstrations of UAM services with air vehicles, and the safe integration of different types of UAS operations in urban environments.
