🚨 “I BUILD WEBSITES” — BUT WHAT ARE YOU ACTUALLY BUILDING?

With AI and platforms like Wix, Squarespace, Shopify and other drag-and-drop builders, almost anyone can create a good-looking website.

And there's nothing wrong with that.

The concern is when someone starts selling website-building services without understanding the technology they're building a client's business on.

A website isn't just colors, pictures and pages. It's part of a business's technology infrastructure.

Before paying someone to build your site, ask:

🔹 Why are you recommending this platform for MY business?
🔹 Will I own and control my domain and accounts?
🔹 Will I have full administrator access?
🔹 What happens if I stop working with you?
🔹 Can another developer take over?
🔹 Can my website be moved to another platform or host?
🔹 What happens when my business grows beyond this setup?

Wix and Squarespace can be excellent for businesses that need an easier, managed website environment.

Shopify can be an excellent choice when e-commerce is the primary focus.

Self-hosted WordPress provides significantly more control and flexibility, including access to your files, database, hosting and extensive customization—but that control also means someone needs to understand hosting, plugins, security, backups, updates, DNS and troubleshooting.

That's the difference people don't always explain.

Knowing how to use a website builder is a legitimate skill.

But knowing how to build a site and knowing how to choose the right technology for a business are two different things.

So ask your website provider one important question:

“Are you recommending this platform because it's right for my business—or because it's the only platform you know how to build on?”

A pretty website is great.

A website built with your business's future in mind is better.

AI CAN HELP YOU START A BUSINESS — BUT IT CAN’T REPLACE UNDERSTANDING YOUR BUSINESS.

I have absolutely no issue with people using AI to start or grow a business. Use the tools. Save time. Automate tasks. Build websites. Create content. Develop ideas. Work smarter.

But here’s the part people are skipping:

You still need to understand how the technology behind your business works.

AI can help you set up a website, email, online store, automations, forms, payment systems, and other tools.

Everything looks great… until it doesn’t work.

Then what?

Your website stops sending forms.
Your business email stops working.
Your domain doesn’t connect.
Your store stops processing something correctly.
An automation breaks.
A password or permission gets changed.
An AI-generated “fix” creates three more problems.

Now your business is depending on technology you never learned how to manage.

And suddenly that setup that was “free” or cheap becomes a very expensive emergency because you need someone to figure out what was built, how it was configured, what broke, and how to fix it — while your business is already being affected.

Use AI. Absolutely.

But while AI helps you build, learn what you’re building.

Know where your domain is registered.

Understand your business email.
Know where your files and customer information live.
Understand your basic security and permissions.
Know which systems are connected to each other.

You don't have to become an IT professional.

You DO need to understand the technology your business depends on.

AI should make you more capable — not make your business completely dependent on something you don't understand.

I've learned that not every product requires my personal hands-on craftsmanship. My custom engravings, memorial pieces, and specialty projects will always receive my personal attention because that's where my craftsmanship makes the biggest impact.
