🔒 A Life-Saving Reminder: Why Security Planning Matters for Mass Gatherings
On June 22, 2025, a tragedy was narrowly averted at CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne, Michigan. A man armed with a rifle, handgun, and tactical vest opened fire in the parking lot just moments before Sunday service. Thanks to the quick actions of church members and an alert security guard, the attacker was stopped before entering the building. Police later confirmed this could have resulted in a mass casualty event.
This Wasn’t Luck—It Was Preparedness
CrossPointe had a plan. Their team didn’t hesitate—they acted.
While the pastor rightly credited divine intervention, we must also recognize the importance of planning, training, and having dedicated security in place. Those steps saved lives.
Why Houses of Worship Must Plan Ahead
Faith-based institutions are meant to be sanctuaries—but sadly, they are not immune to modern threats. Whether stemming from targeted violence, individuals in crisis, or random acts, the risk is real. That’s why churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples must take proactive steps:
✅ Conduct Security Assessments – Identify vulnerabilities in parking areas, entry points, and during large gatherings.
✅ Develop Emergency Plans – Include clear protocols for active shooters, medical events, evacuations, and lockdowns.
✅ Train Staff and Volunteers – Everyone should know their role. Security isn’t just a title—it’s a team effort.
✅ Coordinate with Local Law Enforcement – Build relationships before a crisis occurs.
✅ Use Behavioral Threat Assessments – Early identification of warning signs can prevent violence altogether.
Security Is a Form of Ministry
Creating a secure environment is an act of service. It’s not about fear—it’s about responsibility. Security in places of worship protects the people, preserves peace of mind, and honors the mission of the institution.
Final Thought
The events at CrossPointe Church are a powerful reminder: preparedness is not paranoia—it’s stewardship.
You don’t need to live in fear. But you do need to have a plan. In today’s world, faith and safety must go hand in hand.
🙏🏼 Let’s remember: the time to plan is before the crisis begins.
