Today is International Women's Day and I will be spending my afternoon at the Giant Center watching my niece, Keep Kat on the Mat wrestle in the first ever Girls PIAA Wrestling Championships!
As many of you know, I have a passion for wrestling, and a passion for empowering young ladies to grow to powerhouse women in whatever space they want! And my niece Kat is one of those young women! From the first time we met, she and I had a bond. We just knew we were each other's type of people! And I knew she would grow into a powerhouse woman!
When her wrestling opportunities were at risk after the Tulpehocken School Board decided wrestling wasn't a girls sport, her dad called me. I drove to Tulpehocken and made sure that Kat knew she had support. She spoke to the media, to the school board, to anyone who would listen, and it worked! She was back on the mat!
Today, I get to watch Keep Kat on the Mat wrestle in the very first PIAA Girls Wrestling Championship!!!
Kat, today, when you walk out there, you let it all right there on that mat! Win or lose doesn't matter, because you won before you even laced up those shoes. You are International Women's History today! Because you earned your spot in the first ever, PA Girls PIAA Wrestling Championships.
Naida Borreli, please show this to our girl! Can't wait to lay eyes and hugs on you all!!!
Four years ago, the extent of female representation at the PIAA Wrestling Championships was a pop-up table and a stack of pamphlets on the mezzanine level of Hershey’s Giant Center.
