One of the biggest misconceptions about working from home is that it’s somehow easier.

It’s not. It’s just more flexible.

I can work out in the morning, schedule an appointment when I need to, walk Phoenix between meetings, get back into something at 4 PM when my brain decides it’s finally ready to cooperate, and take a client call in the evening.

I’m not working less.

I’ve just finally built a way of working that actually fits how I work best.

And that flexibility is a huge part of why I chose to build Phoenix Strategic Consulting.

There are definitely days when I miss the predictability of a “normal” job.

But this morning my anxiety was high, and I happened to have a little time between meetings. So at 9:45, I walked out my front door, ran a mile, came home, and got back to work.

It’s a small thing, but it’s also one of the biggest reasons I built Phoenix Strategic Consulting the way I did.

I still have meetings, deadlines, clients, and plenty to get done. I just have the ability to build my work around what I need to actually function well.

And on days like today, I’m really grateful for that.

I will happily admit there are things I miss about having an 8-5.

Predictable paychecks are VERY high on that list. 😂

There was something deeply comforting about knowing exactly how much money was coming and exactly when it would appear.

Working for yourself is…not that.

Some months are stronger. Some are slower. Sometimes you’re waiting for an invoice to get paid while staring at your bank account like perhaps refreshing it will help. 🙃

So this week’s Quick Tip: Budget from your baseline, not your best month.

Build your regular expenses around what you can reliably count on, then use stronger months to save, reinvest in the business, or give yourself some breathing room for the slower ones.

The predictability was nice. Building something of my own is still better. 💙

Also, after completely abandoning my own posting schedule last week, Monday Quick Tips are officially back. Apparently August’s flexibility theme became immersive. 😂

Monday Quick Tip: Schedule your hardest work when YOU work best 🧠

My personal goal is to be working out no later than 7 AM every day.

Do I particularly enjoy being up and moving that early? Debatable 😂 But I know that if I don’t get a pump or a run in first thing, I have a hell of a time getting my brain to wake up enough to do meaningful work.

That’s the benefit of actually paying attention to how you function.

Not every hour is equally productive, and flexibility doesn’t mean laziness. It means I can structure my day so I’m doing the work that requires the most focus when I’m actually capable of giving it that focus.

Figure out when your brain works best. Then protect that time instead of forcing yourself into someone else’s definition of a productive workday💻

A little full-circle moment this week.

I’ve talked a lot about how one of the reasons I work for myself is because getting reasonable accommodations in traditional workplaces was somehow treated like an impossible request.

Now I work with people who respect my need for accommodations.

Even better, the meeting was at Pennovation Works for an innovative company we’re working with as it explores making its way to Philadelphia. There’s still a lot of work ahead, but the ball is officially rolling.

Then we got dinner, the food was apparently too pretty not to document, and this Reel was born.

Here’s to building cool things with people who understand that good work doesn’t require everyone to work exactly the same way.

You know what I actually miss about an 8-5?

Knowing that, barring some catastrophe, 5:00 meant ✨goodbye✨

There was consistency. There were boundaries. There was the beautiful little ritual of closing the laptop and making whatever happened next tomorrow’s problem.

Working for myself? 😂 Some days I’m done at 3. Some days it’s 7. Some days I make a beautiful schedule in the morning and life looks at it and says, “That’s cute.”

I miss the consistency.

But I don’t miss having a schedule so rigid that one appointment, emergency, or random life thing throws the entire day into chaos.

📌 Monday Quick Tip: Plan for interruptions, not perfect days.

Leave yourself some room to adjust. Because apparently life did not receive a copy of your calendar.

One year ago, I officially started Phoenix Strategic Consulting because I was tired of trying to fit into jobs that wouldn’t accommodate the way I needed to work.

I can work. I can lead. I can manage the chaos. I can get s**t done.

I just needed to do it from home.

So I built the job myself. 💻🐶

One year later, I’m working with incredible clients, taking on bigger projects, still figuring things out as I go, and apparently running an actual company.

Happy 1st birthday, Phoenix Strategic Consulting. 💙

Welcome to August’s theme:

“Some Days I Miss Having an 8-5. Then I Remember Why I Left.”

I’ll admit it. Every once in a while I catch myself thinking how nice it would be to have a predictable paycheck, weekends that are actually weekends, and a schedule someone else worries about.

Then I remember why I started Phoenix Strategic Consulting.

I didn’t leave because I couldn’t do the work. I left because I wanted to build a career around results instead of where I happened to be sitting. Running a business comes with long hours, uncertainty, and wearing way more hats than anyone should own, but it also gives me the flexibility to work in a way that allows me to do my best work.

Throughout August, I’m sharing the honest side of entrepreneurship. Not the highlight reel. The real moments, the funny ones, the frustrating ones, and the reminders that sometimes the path that fits you best doesn’t look like everyone else’s.
