Learning from Experience: Building a Business That Lasts
As part of our Summer Field Marketing Internship program, our students recently visited local business owner Willie Fair at his West Hartford Soul Bowls location. They were able to enjoy some delicious soul food and learn firsthand what it takes to build and sustain a successful company.
One theme stood out throughout the conversation: growth starts with people.
Willie, who is one of the business partners, shared insights on succession planning, transferring skills to the next generation, creating strong company culture, and the importance of starting small while building a foundation for long-term success. Willie and his partners currently have two Soul Bowls locations on in Hartford, and the other in West Hartford!

Meet Kali! Kali has been a Tax Associate at TaxAbility for two years, where she reviews QBO files and prepares tax returns. She likes working with a diverse portfolio of clients and tax situations and enjoys the sense of community in the workplace. Her favorite part of working with our clients is helping their small businesses progress and grow. Kali graduated in December 2024 with an accounting degree from CCSU and is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Accounting (MSA) at UMass Dartmouth, graduating in December 2026. During a recent client visit, our Summer Field Marketing Interns had the opportunity to
hear firsthand from business owner Aida Koni and her office manager Bella about how
passion and perseverance can help build a successful business. Aida would know she

Passion and Consistency Drive Success
Our interns recently met with a business owner Larry Tapley, at his Factory Square
restaurant called The Lab. Larry made the team some amazing food, and emphasized
that building a successful business requires dedication, quality, and continuous effort.
Larry also spoke about his desire to uplift the other small business owners in Factory

Square, his belief that good food will drive in more consumers, and more consumers are
good for ALL the businesses in Factory Square.
Throughout the discussion, one theme remained constant: do things the right way.
