🍷 **Monday Winemaking Tip: Don't Let the Numbers Make Every Decision**

Brix matters.

pH matters.

TA matters.

But there's another harvest tool that doesn't require any equipment:

**Your palate.**

Taste the grapes.

What does the berry taste like?

Is the fruit character developing?

Are you still noticing green or vegetal characteristics?

How do the skins feel?

What's happening with the seeds?

Is the fruit healthy?

Numbers give winemakers incredibly useful informationβ€”but they're pieces of a larger picture.

Two lots of Cabernet Sauvignon can have the same Brix and still be very different fruit.

The best winemakers learn to combine:

πŸ§ͺ **Measurement**

πŸ‘€ **Observation**

πŸ‘… **Taste**

πŸ“ **Experience**

That's also why keeping harvest records becomes so valuable.

Vintage after vintage, you're not simply collecting numbers.

**You're learning what those numbers eventually taste like in the bottle.**

πŸ“Œ Save this one for harvest.

🍷 **Think about what you're about to put into this year's wine.**

The grapes or juice.

The yeast.

The equipment.

The bottles.

The supplies.

Your weekends.

Your patience.

And months of waiting to finally pull that first cork.

A vintage represents more than the cost of the fruit.

**It's an investment.**

And some of the smallest decisions you make along the way can have an enormous impact on what's eventually inside that bottle.

Fermentation management.

Wine chemistry.

Racking.

Clarification.

Stabilization.

Aging.

Bottling.

That's why we believe one of the best things you can invest in before harvest is **your own winemaking knowledge.**

❓ **Customer Question of the Week**

**"How many grapes do I actually need to make my wine?"**

It's one of the most common questions we hear heading into harvest.

And the answer is:

**It depends.**

Your final yield can vary based on the grape variety, fruit condition, pressing method, winemaking process, and how much wine is lost through fermentation, racking, aging, and clarification.

That's why experienced winemakers don't plan their grape purchase based solely on the exact number of finished bottles they hope to make.

They leave room for normal cellar losses along the way.

If you're trying to figure out how much fruit you'll need this harvest, don't guess.

Tell us:

πŸ‡ What you're making
🍷 How much finished wine you'd like
🏠 Whether you're a home winemaker or winery

And we'll help you think through your order.

πŸ‡ **There's an old lesson harvest teaches us every single year...**

**The grapes don't care about our schedule.**

We can plan trucks.

Prepare orders.

Coordinate customers.

Clean equipment.

Schedule crews.

And create the most beautiful harvest calendar imaginable.

Then Mother Nature gets the final vote.

That's agriculture.

And after more than 50 years of harvests at Musto Wine Grape Company, we've learned that preparation mattersβ€”but so does flexibility.

Over the coming weeks, we'll be talking with growers, watching fruit mature, coordinating transportation, and keeping customers informed as California's 2026 vintage begins making its way east.

Some days will go exactly according to plan.

Some won't.

That's harvest. πŸ‡

And we wouldn't trade it for anything.

🍷 **What would you do if your fermentation stopped tomorrow?**

Or your wine started smelling like rotten eggs?

Or your Brix wasn't dropping the way you expected?

Harvest doesn't always go according to plan.

And when something changes, understanding **why it's happening** can be far more valuable than simply knowing which product to reach for.

That's exactly why we created **WinemakingInstructions.com.**

Step-by-step winemaking education designed to help you understand the process, recognize problems earlier, and make better decisions throughout your vintage.

And right now, we're making it much easier to prepare before harvest.

πŸ”¬ **Wine Chemistry Explained: pH vs. TA**

You've checked your Brix.

Now let's talk about two other numbers winemakers should understand:

**pH and Titratable Acidity (TA).**

They're relatedβ€”but they don't tell you the same thing.

πŸ§ͺ **pH** helps us understand the strength of the acidic environment in the wine and has important implications for things like microbial stability, sulfur dioxide effectiveness, color, and overall wine stability.

πŸ‹ **TA** measures the amount of titratable acid present and can help us understand how acidic the wine may taste.

That's why two wines can have similar pH readings but still taste different.

And it's why looking at **Brix + pH + TA + the actual taste and condition of the fruit** gives you a much better picture than relying on one number alone.

The goal isn't to chase a "perfect" number.

**The goal is to understand what the numbers are telling you about the wine you're trying to make.**

πŸ“Œ Save this one for harvest.

Have a wine chemistry question? Bring it in. These are exactly the conversations we love having with winemakers.

πŸ‡ 2026 PRICING IS HERE. HARVEST IS ALMOST HERE.

Labor Day weekend is almost hereβ€”and that means California harvest is right behind it.

2026 California grape and juice pricing is now available, with our first arrivals expected shortly after Labor Day. πŸ‡

If you're planning to make wine this fall, use the long weekend to get your crush plan together.

Before the fruit starts moving, confirm:

βœ“ What varieties are you making?
βœ“ How much do you need?
βœ“ Have you checked current grape and juice pricing?
βœ“ Are you picking up or arranging delivery?
βœ“ Do you have enough tank and fermenter space?
βœ“ Are your yeast, nutrients and harvest supplies ready?

The best time to make your harvest decisions is before the fruit is on the road.

🏭 Wineries & Wholesale Partners:
Now is the time to confirm projected volumes, varieties, delivery windows and customer commitments. Talk with us about truckload, mixed-load, grape and juice needs before arrivals begin.

🍷 Home Winemakers:

πŸ‡ **Did You Know?**

Once wine grapes are picked, the clock starts moving.

The journey from vineyard to your cellar isn't simply:

**Pick β†’ Ship β†’ Make Wine.**

Behind the scenes, growers, harvest crews, trucking companies, suppliers, wineries, and winemakers are all coordinating to help get that fruit where it needs to go.

And during harvest, timing can change quickly.

Weather changes.

Fruit ripens fasterβ€”or slowerβ€”than expected.

Picking dates move.

Trucks move.

Arrival schedules move.

That's why one of the most valuable things a winemaker can bring to harvest is **flexibility.**

At MWG, we'll be communicating with our growers throughout California harvest and keeping customers updated as fruit begins moving east.

πŸ‡ **California grapes are expected to begin arriving after Labor Day.**

If you're planning your 2026 vintage and haven't talked with us yet, now is the time.
