No Margin, No Mission

No Margin, No Mission No Margin, No Mission is a social enterprise and national consulting practice that helps nonprofits

We work with organizations that have a social or environmental mission to help them expand their margin so they're better able to achieve their mission. Our focus is on helping clients diversify revenue through earned income strategies. We operate from the premise that many nonprofits have created assets of value that can be sold to other stakeholders to help generate financial resources for their

organization -- which could include anything from curriculum, trainings, keynote speaking engagements, consulting, and a whole host of other offerings. In the end, our goal is to help nonprofits gain some financial stability and independence by reducing their dependence on grants and donations, particularly as the challenging economic environment of recent years has left so many organizations unable to expand, grow, thrive, or even survive.

For the past 15 years, No Margin, No Mission has partnered with nonprofits that are proving how an entrepreneurial venture can amplify mission outcomes while improving long-term financial health. As part of our yearlong campaign featuring 52 earned-income success stories, this week's feature highlights the Noah Webster House and its social enterprise, The West Hartford Gift Shop.

Committed to safeguarding Noah Webster's legacy and making local history accessible and engaging, the organization looked for new ways to broaden its revenue streams while strengthening relationships within the community. Through the Greater Hartford Gives Foundation's Social Enterprise Accelerator, the team examined how its existing resources, strengths, and community ties could be transformed into a revenue-generating venture aligned with its mission.

The journey started in the Accelerator's Learning Labs, where organizational leaders considered multiple opportunities before selecting a retail concept designed to showcase local identity, history, and community spirit. That process led to the creation of The West Hartford Gift Shop, a retail destination offering locally themed merchandise, distinctive gifts, and products that help visitors connect with the heritage and culture of Noah Webster and West Hartford.

With guidance from No Margin, No Mission, the Noah Webster House progressed into the Accelerator's intensive consulting stage, where the organization developed a business plan, raised startup capital, implemented the venture, and tracked progress over time.

Since its launch in 2022, The West Hartford Gift Shop has generated nearly $100,000 in revenue, contributing to a more stable financial future for the organization while boosting awareness, deepening community involvement, and reaching new audiences. Throughout the process, the venture has enhanced organizational capabilities, encouraged an entrepreneurial culture, and illustrated how cultural organizations can use business activities to advance preservation and educational goals.

It serves as yet another compelling example that when nonprofits capitalize on the knowledge, resources, and community relationships they already have, they can develop dependable sources of unrestricted revenue while furthering their mission in impactful ways. For 15 years, No Margin, No Mission has had the privilege of working alongside nonprofits that are finding innovative ways to strengthen both mission and margin. As part of our yearlong series highlighting 52 nonprofit success stories, this week's spotlight shines on Senior Friendship Centers and its remarkable entrepreneurial journey.

Senior Friendship Centers was part of The Patterson Foundation's inaugural Margin & Mission Ignition cohort in 2015, recognizing early on that earned income could help strengthen its ability to serve older adults while building long-term financial thrivability. Through MMI's Learning Lab series, the organization explored a variety of possibilities before identifying mission-aligned ventures that could generate unrestricted revenue while advancing its mission.

One of those opportunities was The Caregiving Place, an adult day services program designed to provide engaging, supportive care for older adults while offering peace of mind and respite for family caregivers. Building on the organization's deep expertise in serving seniors, the venture addresses a growing community need while creating a sustainable source of earned income.

Following the Learning Labs, Senior Friendship Centers advanced into the intensive consulting phase of MMI, partnering with No Margin, No Mission to develop a business plan, secure startup capital, implement the venture, and track performance over time.

Today, The Caregiving Place has generated nearly $4 million in revenue since inception, helping strengthen the organization's financial foundation and expand its impact throughout the region.

Beyond the financial benefits, the ripple effects have been equally significant: increased community awareness, stronger partnerships, enhanced organizational capacity, greater caregiver support, expanded services for older adults, and a culture that embraces innovation and entrepreneurial thinking.

It's another powerful reminder that when nonprofits align mission, expertise, and entrepreneurial opportunity, the results extend far beyond revenue -- they create stronger organizations and greater community impact. For 15 years, No Margin, No Mission has worked alongside nonprofits that are proving mission and entrepreneurship can go hand in hand. As part of our yearlong series celebrating 52 earned income success stories, this week's spotlight turns to CRIS Radio- Connecticut Radio Information System and its innovative CRIS Access venture.

CRIS Radio has long been dedicated to ensuring that people who are blind, have low vision, or have print disabilities can stay informed, engaged, and connected. Through the Greater Hartford Gives Foundation's Social Enterprise Accelerator, the organization began exploring how a mission-aligned enterprise could both advance that purpose and strengthen long-term financial thrivability.

The journey started in the Accelerator's Learning Labs, where the CRIS team evaluated a variety of possibilities before identifying CRIS Access -- a professional accessibility services business offering audio description, captioning, transcription, translation, and other communication solutions that help organizations make their content accessible to everyone.

With support from No Margin, No Mission, CRIS Radio advanced into the initiative's intensive consulting phase to refine the concept, build a business plan, secure startup capital, implement the venture, and track results over time.

Since its launch in 2019, CRIS Access has generated nearly $500,000 in earned revenue while helping businesses, nonprofits, and public agencies create more inclusive experiences for their audiences. Along the way, the venture has expanded community awareness, strengthened organizational capacity, fostered an entrepreneurial mindset, and reinforced the long-term thrivability of the organization.

It's another powerful example that when nonprofits leverage their expertise to meet real community needs, they can create new sources of unrestricted income while amplifying mission impact. Learn more: https://crisradio.org/ https://nomarginnomission.org/

HOT OFF THE PRESS: We're excited to welcome the Scranton Area Community Foundation to No Margin, No Mission's family of client partners!

Dedicated to improving quality of life throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania through philanthropy, leadership, and community engagement, the Scranton Area Community Foundation will soon launch a new initiative to help nonprofits become more thrivable through earned income and social enterprise.

As nonprofits face growing demand, funding pressures, and economic uncertainty, diversified revenue is becoming increasingly important. Together, we'll help organizations explore and pursue mission-aligned ventures that generate unrestricted income, strengthen financial resilience, and expand community impact.

This partnership grew out of a connection made at The Patterson Foundation's recent "Beyond the Check" Dine Around in Seattle during the Council on Foundations Annual Conference. A conversation about supporting nonprofits beyond traditional grantmaking quickly revealed a shared commitment to helping organizations build long-term thrivability through entrepreneurship.

Stay tuned for more details about this exciting initiative and the opportunities it will create for nonprofits across Northeastern Pennsylvania! https://safdn.org/ https://nomarginnomission.org/

As No Margin, No Mission continues to recognize the organizations that have helped shape our journey over the past 15 years, we're featuring one nonprofit partner each week for 52 weeks. Resilient Retreat is a standout example of how entrepreneurial thinking and mission-aligned earned income can help an organization expand its impact, deepen community connection, and strengthen long-term thrivability.

In 2022, Resilient Retreat participated in The Patterson Foundation’s Margin & Mission Ignition Learning Lab series to explore and vet a range of earned income and social enterprise possibilities that could boost unrestricted revenue and mission impact. Through that process, the organization identified a strong and viable opportunity AND demonstrated preparedness for success through strong alignment in LWRCC — leadership, willingness, readiness, capacity, and culture.

As a result, Resilient Retreat advanced into the intensive consulting phase of MMI, partnering with No Margin, No Mission to develop a comprehensive business plan, secure startup capital, implement the venture, and track performance over time for the launch of The Retreat Sarasota, a mission-aligned venue rental enterprise that transforms meetings, retreats, weddings, milestone celebrations, workshops, and special events into a source of sustainable earned revenue. Known as The Venue that Saves Lives, every booking helps support Resilient Retreat’s work providing healing-centered programming and services for individuals recovering from trauma, while also introducing new audiences to the organization and its mission.

Building on that momentum, Resilient Retreat returned in 2025 for Advanced MMI to further expand its entrepreneurial strategy through the launch of Wellness Services at The Retreat Sarasota. The new offerings — including Sound Bath, Guided Breathwork and Meditation, Gentle Yoga Stretch, Qigong, Therapeutic Dance, and more — are designed to complement venue rentals while also being available as standalone experiences for the broader community.

Together, The Retreat Sarasota and its soon-to-launch Wellness Services have generated more than $500,000 in total revenue to date while producing ripple effects that extend far beyond income: expanded community engagement, stronger partnerships, increased organizational visibility, enhanced staff capacity, and a growing culture of innovation and entrepreneurial thinking. By aligning enterprise with purpose, Resilient Retreat continues to prove that healing and thrivability can grow hand in hand. Fifteen years. Fifty-two stories. Countless examples of nonprofits finding new ways to strengthen mission impact through entrepreneurial thinking. As part of No Margin, No Mission’s yearlong series highlighting nonprofit success stories in earned income and social enterprise, this week’s spotlight shines on Hartford's Camp Courant.

With a mission focused on providing transformative summer experiences for children and families, Camp Courant explored how earned income could help strengthen long-term thrivability while expanding community impact. That journey started in 2023 through the Greater Hartford Gives Foundation’s Social Enterprise Accelerator.

Beginning with the Accelerator’s Learning Labs, the Camp Courant team explored and vetted a range of entrepreneurial opportunities before identifying The Pavilions at Camp Courant as a particularly strong mission-aligned venture. Designed as a venue rental enterprise, The Pavilions leverages the organization’s beautiful campus and facilities to host children's birthday parties, milestone celebrations, showers, corporate meetings and events, nonprofit gatherings, community functions, and more.

Recognizing the opportunity, Camp Courant advanced into the intensive consulting phase of the initiative, working alongside No Margin, No Mission to develop a business plan, raise needed startup capital, implement the venture, and track performance over time.

Today, The Pavilions at Camp Courant has generated nearly $100,000 in earned revenue while helping maximize use of the organization’s campus beyond the summer season. The venture has strengthened Camp Courant’s financial foundation while increasing visibility, building new community partnerships, and creating additional opportunities to connect people to the organization’s mission.

The ripple effects have been equally meaningful — expanded community awareness, stronger organizational capacity, increased entrepreneurial thinking, and greater long-term sustainability.

It’s another reminder that when nonprofits align mission, assets, and entrepreneurial opportunity, the result can be more than revenue. It can create stronger organizations and greater community impact. WHERE IN THE WORLD IS No Margin, No Mission? This week, we're in beautiful Seattle, Washington! As part of the Council on Foundations 2026 Annual Conference, our Managing Partners and Principals, Larry Clark and Mike Oxman, were honored to serve as featured guest speakers at The Patterson Foundations filled-to-capacity Funders Dine Around at Daniel's Broiler.

The topic for the evening: Boosting Nonprofit Thrivability by Investing “Beyond the Check.” The conversation centered around Margin & Mission Ignition (MMI), TPF’s long-running initiative designed to help nonprofits become more thrivable through earned income and social enterprise. What began with TPF sharing its approach to investing in long-term nonprofit thrivability quickly turned into lively table discussions filled with thoughtful questions, fresh ideas, and practical conversations about how philanthropy can help nonprofits build more sustainable revenue and greater mission impact over time.

A special thank you to our TPF colleagues and partners -- Debra Jacobs, Julio Suarez, and Michelle Walker -- for creating such a meaningful evening, and to all the philanthropic leaders from around the country who helped make the conversation so engaging and worthwhile.
