Litchfield Jazz Camp is offering need-based scholarships to students in the Hartford region thanks to a grant from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving’s Donor Advised Funds. Any student with an interest in playing jazz from the age of 12 -18 with demonstrated financial need (submit W-2 or equivalent) may apply. The program is outstanding but non-competitive. There is no pre-audition. Students are assigned to skill-matched combos when they arrive. The program welcomes beginners to advanced players.
Visit www.litchfieldjazzcamp.org for details, instructor bios and more. This summer’s Litchfield Jazz Festival celebrates the 20th anniversary of the camp with Generations of Jazz, featuring former campers who have “made it” alongside well known artists who have been their mentors. Among these are the Curtis Brothers Trio originally from Hartford, CT, with New Orleans saxophonist Donald Harrison, bassist Daryl Johns with the great drummer Steve Johns and pianist Orrin Evans, Monk Competition finalist and rising star pianist Emmet Cohen and his mentor NEA Jazz Master and musical giant, Jimmy Heath, Connecticut native and former member of Herbie Hancock’s ensemble, drummer Richie Barshay with Grammy nominee sax man Jimmy Greene, and many more.
