You wouldn't start a journey without knowing where you're headed—so why approach the sale of your business without a plan?

Understanding your business's current value is the first step toward a successful exit. With the right valuation and a proactive exit strategy, you can identify opportunities to grow value, prepare for the unexpected, and transition on your terms.

George & Co helps business owners navigate every step of the process—from valuation and exit planning to a successful sale.

When Should You Tell Employees You’re Selling Your Business?

Selling a business is a major transition — and deciding when to tell your employees can be one of the most difficult parts of the process. Tell them too early, and uncertainty can create unnecessary concern. Tell them too late, and employees may feel blindsided.

So when is the right time?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The timing depends on factors like the stage of the transaction, confidentiality concerns, the buyer’s plans, and the potential impact on employees. At George & Company, we help business owners navigate not just the transaction itself, but the people, communication, and transition considerations that come with selling a business.

Case Study: Fleet Electrical Service

After 52 years in business, Fleet Electrical Service’s founder, Gary Ford, was ready to retire — but finding the right buyer was about more than simply putting the business on the market.

George & Company helped navigate a confidential sale of the Massachusetts-based specialized fleet services company to strategic buyer Mason White.

Our team:
• Conducted a confidential valuation highlighting recurring utility contracts and significant government opportunities
• Identified and targeted qualified strategic buyers through our proprietary network
• Prepared the business for due diligence across assets, inventory, and intellectual property
• Helped balance the needs of both seller and buyer throughout the transaction

The result? A successful transition that honored Gary’s legacy while positioning Fleet Electrical Service for continued growth under new ownership.

For business owners, a successful sale isn't just about finding a buyer — it's about finding the right buyer and preparing for the transition.

Q: How far in advance should I plan to sell my business?

A: Ideally, business owners should begin planning 2–5 years before they intend to sell.

Starting early gives you time to strengthen financial performance, improve operations, reduce potential risks, and make the business more attractive to qualified buyers. It also allows you to identify opportunities to increase the overall value of your business before going to market.

Even if you’re not ready to sell yet, exit planning today can help you build a stronger, more valuable business for tomorrow.

At George & Company, we help business owners evaluate their goals, prepare for a successful transition, and maximize the value of what they’ve built.

Are you ready to sell your business?

Knowing when to sell can be just as important as knowing how to sell.

If you’re facing financial constraints, losing interest in the day-to-day, seeing market demand decline, or finding that personal priorities are taking precedence, it may be time to start considering your exit strategy.

The earlier you start planning, the more options you may have to protect your business value, attract qualified buyers, and create a smoother transition.

Serious Business. Lighthearted Lessons. Tip #89

The owner of the business may not be ready to retire, but the business may be ready for a new owner.

Many older business owners, for whatever reason, aren't willing to sell their companies. But businesses can go into decline without new ideas, new direction and new energy. Not selling the company can be risky. Too many things can go wrong as the owner continues to age -- health issues, health issues of spouse, or the business can't keep up with the times. It can be a tough decision, but timing is everything, and waiting too long to sell may have a very undesirable outcome.
