Saying “no” can be a scary thing to do for many of us,, and this fear is often driven by concerns about disappointing others or missing out on future opportunities. Overcoming FOSN—or a “fear of saying no”—is essential if one hopes to achieve a well-integrated life, maintain healthy boundaries and grow in their career. It’s the difference between being valuable or invaluable!

In a recent article, I share my tip for conquering this all too common challenge:

Recognize That ‘No’ Makes Space For ‘Yes’

“I coach my clients to recognize that a “no” here is a “yes” there. When they say “no” to something—an opportunity, a path, a request, an invitation—they are making space for a potentially bigger “yes” (even if they don't yet know what it is). “No,” which is a full sentence, is often hard to say for those of us who want to make a contribution. But it's essential if we want to target our impact.”

Sometimes an illusion (or a vision) is needed to give us something to believe in, to give form and meaning to an unknown (and uncertain) future. Leaders can make that illusion feel inevitable with the right narrative - one that builds a bridge from the past to the present, and on to a singular, destined future - diminishing doubts and uncertainty.

Build a narrative with intent! ✨

10/13/2023

Leaders are often called upon to be more transparent, fully authentic, and to bring their whole selves to work. This is great encouragement, but discernment is called for in meeting these moments. We must ask ourselves the following: when are we sharing parts of ourselves in the service of deeper connection, and when might we have shared too much?

In this short response to a question posed to the I offer the example of discussing one’s personal finances as both unnecessary and potentially unhelpful. Or worse. Read:

“There is a big difference between being your whole self at work and giving TMI. I encourage my clients to think of holding a barbell. On the one end is integration, and on the other is boundaries. Having healthy boundaries is a necessary component of healthy communication. One area to gut check is money; leaders should never talk about their personal financial concerns or what they “deserve”—ever!

There are others of course (link to full article in my bio), and I’d love to know what you consider worth sharing or, by contrast, inappropriate. Comment below 👇.
