Faith, psychotherapy, and psychiatric care work together. Prayer, scripture, counseling, community support, therapy, and medical treatment can all be part of healing.
The Bible never teaches us to ignore wisdom, support, or care when someone is suffering. Luke, one of the writers of the Gospel, was a physician. Proverbs reminds us there is wisdom in seeking counsel. Even Elijah experienced emotional exhaustion and despair and was cared for physically before spiritually.
Mental illnesses such as severe depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, anxiety disorders, and trauma-related conditions are real medical and psychological concerns, not a sign of weak faith, hidden sin, or demonic possession. While faith can provide strength, hope, and spiritual grounding, some situations also require licensed mental health treatment, crisis intervention, medication management, and professional support.
Telling someone in a psychiatric crisis to “just pray harder” without proper intervention can deepen shame, hopelessness, fear, and isolation. We must stop stigmatizing mental health care within faith communities and normalize appropriate care.
God can work through therapists.
God can work through psychiatrists.
God can work through medication.
God can work through prayer.
Seeking help is not a lack of faith but wisdom, stewardship, and courage.
