Tonight members of the HVFD reviewed our Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). Lieutenant Root reviewed basic SCBA Skills, and demonstrated all features of our new Air Packs. Members reviewed how to perform Checks of the Equipment, how to Change out Air Cylinders, and all mechanics of the Pack.

In small communities like Hawley, we are very fortunate that there are not frequent Structure Fires, or other severe emergencies. However it is important to review this equipment on a regular basis to keep our skills fresh in the event of a fire.

Twenty-five years later, we remember the 343 firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001, along with the thousands of innocent lives lost that day.
We honor their courage, their service, and their unwavering commitment to helping others. Their sacrifice continues to remind us of the brotherhood and responsibility carried by every firefighter.
We will never forget. 🇺🇸🚒

Retirement of Hawley X-2
Assistant Fire Chief Bob Root

Assistant Chief Root joined the Hawley Volunteer Fire Department in 1999, and over the last 27 years served the Department in several different capacities. As a Firefighter, Captain, and finishing out his career as Assistant Fire Chief.

Bob was a valuable resource bringing his past life experience as a truck driver. He was able to teach newer members how to drive the Apparatus, many of whom had never driven large trucks before. He also used his life experience to navigate and help people within the State Forest.

Bob also helped get the Department to where it is today, specializing in finding solutions where budgets didn’t exist. Bob used his ingenuity to create ways to get the job done and find equipment without added cost to the taxpayers.

Bob also motivated his Son, Brandon, to join the Department from an early age. Brandon now serves as a Fire Lieutenant, and also the Town’s Emergency Management Director.

Bob, on behalf of the HVFD, we would like to Thank You for your service and dedication over the last 27 years.

Enjoy your well deserved retirement! You’re welcome at the Fire House anytime you’d like to stop by!

This evening, a crew of 6 members of the Hawley Fire Department and Hawley Engine 2 were assigned to provide fire protection and emergency response for the truck pulls and the Cumington Fair. Fortunately, the night was without incident. Events such as these showcase the strong mutual aid relationships that exist between our towns. Thank you to Cummington for their hospitality. We'll be back next year.

Today several Hawley Fire members took part in Niles LaValley Celebration Of Life in Westfield MA. Niles as well as his family both played important roles with Hawley Fire in the early 2000’s, his father Gene, serving as a EMT and Captain for numerous years. Niles will be sorely missed.
