RENO, Nev. — Coeur d’Alene Art Auction’s 2026 summer sale brought an impressive $17 million total, once again setting the bar for Western Art, and achieving numerous world records. The auction was led by John Ford Clymer’s The Trader, selling for a world-record $1,119,250. Other staggering results include those of Frederic Remington’s The Broncho Buster #2 ($968,000 - a record for a Bonnard Bronze Company casting of the artist’s most-iconic sculptural work); Philip R. Goodwin’s The Law of the Wilderness ($847,000 – the second-highest Goodwin sale, only surpassed by Coeur d’Alene’s record breaking $968,000 sale of Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea in 2022); and multiple Eanger Irving Couse, Charles M. Russell, Edgar Payne, Charles Schreyvogel, and Joseph Sharp masterpieces. The largest single-auction event in the classic Western and American Art field saw over 30 lots eclipse the $100,000 price point, rendering a sales rate of 97% for the 379-lot sale in front of a packed house on July 25.
Enthusiastic bidding for Clymer’s The Trader brought the overflowing crowd to applause, as a spirited bidding war between a floor and a phone bidder culminated with the world-record price of over $1.1 million. Additionally, The Prowler, a 20-by-40-inch wildlife scene sold for $78,650, bringing the famed artist’s sale total to nearly $1.2 million.
The once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to purchase Remington’s most iconic sculptural work – The Broncho Buster #2 – created a fervor that spread to other pieces from the seminal Western artist. The posthumous casting of the same piece – The Broncho Buster #125 – soared past its pre-sale high estimate, bringing $157,300. Not to be outdone, Remington’s two-dimensional pieces showed a strong market, as A “Wind Jammer” sold for $157,300, and When Her Man’s Work Was Done sold for $66,500.
Coeur d’Alene Art Auction mainstay Charles Russell continued to bring strong results at the Western art market’s pinnacle sale, as total sales neared $800,000. Pablo-Allard Buffalo Drive, a watercolor fraught with action from the famed 1907 the Pablo Buffalo Roundup, settled at $484,000 after a feverish bidding war. Wild Bill’s Fight with M’Candlas Gang [or] Wild Bill Hickok’s Greatest Feat, a detailed pen-and-ink, sold for $78,650.
With the sale of The Law of the Wilderness, Coeur d’Alene Art Auction continues its success with Goodwin, as the auction house owns the seven highest prices at auction for the celebrated American illustrator. In addition to Goodwin, enthusiasm for Sporting and Wildlife art remained high, as works by renowned wildlife artist Bob Kuhn brought a collective total of over $800,000. Buffalo Bulls in Late Light sold for $96,800; A Matter of Odds fetched $211,750; and Lion and Wildebeest rendered a sales price of $114,950. Works by German wildlife master Carl Rungius continue to achieve top dollar at Coeur d’Alene Art Auction. Headed to High Country, a 20-by-25 wildlife oil, exceeded the high estimate with a sales price of $181,500. Pack Train, which came from a prominent collection, sold for $78,650.
Edmund Osthaus’ Three Setters nearly reached the $200,000-mark, selling for $193,600, which represents the third-highest auction price for Osthaus. Coeur d’Alene Art Auction holds the record for an Osthaus, which was established in its 2021 sale. Known as one of the foremost painters of water fowl, Harry Adamon’s Autumn Reverie – Greenheads set a world record, commanding a price of $51,425. Overall, Adamson paintings garnered a total of nearly $130,000 at this year’s sale. Coeur d’alene Art Auction is responsible for two of Adamson’s three highest prices at auction. A contemporary of Adamson, David Maass’ Greenheads, achieved the second-highest amount ever for the recently deceased wildlife artist, selling for $45,375.
Coeur d’Alene Art Auction continues its run of success with the Taos Society of Artists, as multiple significant paintings found new homes. E.I. Couse’s The Duck Hunter, a masterfully rendered oil that depicts a Native American hunter scouting a flock of ducks, sparked a spirited bidding war before selling for $453,750 - the highest sum for a Couse at auction in over two years. Voice of the Falls ($242,000), Firelight Drummer ($66,500), and The Moonlit Pool ($57,475) were part of an impressive haul for Couse, as total sales netted over $1 million.
Works by other TSA luminaries include Joseph Sharp’s Looks Ahead and Squaw, Crow, which brought $363,000. The richly detailed, colorful, and bright oil, depicting two Crow Indians standing before tepees in an outdoor encampment, had remained in the same family for over 100 years since it was purchased from the famed TSA painter. Evening Council, a 25-by-30-inch oil, detailing a firelit gathering of Native American figures among boulders and dark pines at dusk, sold for $181,500. Other Sharp masterpieces heading to new collections include Crucita – Blue Shawl and Hollyhocks ($114,950), The Peace Vision ($78,650), and Chief White Weasel ($72,600). Overall, Sharp works garnered nearly $1 million in sales.
Other notable TSA sales include Oscar Berninhaus’ Indians Returning to Taos After a Trading Expedition ($205,700); William Herbert Dunton’s Don’t Look Back ($193,600) and Study #18 - Trees ($108,900); and Bert Geer Phillips’ Uncas ($66,500) and The Water Carrier, Taos Pueblo ($51,425).
Legendary and versatile artist Edgar Payne saw intense bidding action. Riders Overlooking Canyon exceeded its high estimate, selling for $272,250, and Navajo Riders and In the Sierra each sold for $78,650, respectively. Overall, Payne works sold for just over $450,000.
John George Brown’s Watching the Train, a nostalgic and idealized countryside scene of seven children joyously watching a train from a fenceline, sold over estimate at $302,500. Brown came to fame as one of the 19th-century’s most skilled painters of children.
Charles Schreyvogel’s The Couriers, a dramatic cavalry-on-the-frontier scene, sold for $302,500. The price represents the third highest for a Schreyvogel painting in over five years.
Works by Native American artists Oscar Howe, Earl Biss, John Nieto, Fritz Scholder, and Tony Abeyta continue to attract attention at Coeur d’Alene Art Auction, reflecting the staying power with Indigenous perspectives in Western art. Howe’s Horse Dancer and Herakawin (Elk Woman) each fetched $272,250, and Sioux War Dancer brought $217,800. Coeur d’Alene Art Auction is responsible for seven of the top nine auction prices for Howe. Biss’ A Cold Wind on the Rainbow People ($78,650), The Shield of Bright Wings in the Morning ($48,400), and Wandering Through Black Lodge ($45,375) all exceeded their respective high estimates. Nieto’s Running Coyote sold for $48,400, and Two Moon sold for $42,350. Scholder’s Shaman with Shadow sold for $51,425. Abeyta’s Frolicking Magpies commanded the contemporary artist’s second-highest price at auction, with a $42,350 sales price.
Significant contemporary works finding new homes include: Mark Maggiori’s Down the Wash ($157,300) and Four Native American Riders ($19,360); Don Oelze’s Ten Miles Too Far ($84,700), The Long Shot ($66,550), Buffalo Prayers ($39,325), and Hidden Eyes ($20,570); Ed Mell’s Mesa’s Flames ($36,300), Scattered Showers ($21,870), Slanted Mesas I ($20,570), Painted Land ($20,570), Dusty Sundown ($19,360), and Storm Dimensions I ($15,730) - all six of which sold for above their respective high estimates; and Mark Boedges’ The Glittering World sold for $84,700, which sets a world record for the Missouri artist.
