TIS THE SEASON…
For connecting with family and friends we haven’t seen in a while…
For holiday celebrations with co-workers, with neighbors, with family…
For the excited hustle of the shopping crowd…
For making lists and checking them twice…
For gift exchanges with everyone we know, even if they already have everything they need and most of what they want…
For stressing over the perfect gift…
Well, enough is enough. New tactic this year.
How about exchanging son-in-law’s really nice sweater for a gift to a homeless shelter that feeds those who need a meal. And daughter’s silk pj’s from Victoria Secret for a donation to a facility that assists young people aging out of foster care. Uncle Don’s argyle socks and silk tie can be exchanged for a gift to the local library or hospital fund. Co-worker Sheila’s bottle of really -good-smelling hand lotion can be replaced with a gift to a local family that you know is struggling through the holidays. Cousin Sue’s nice perfume can be exchanged for a donation to an organization that helps veterans that are disabled or displaced.
What we think of as small donations add up to real help in local communities. We cannot see the smiles of a woman and her children in a shelter, or the joy of parents able to put one gift under the tree for their child. We will not know of the relief of a family without health care when the hospital says yes to care and treatment of their sick kid. But we can feel good inside knowing that our Christmas dollars will not be pushed to the back of the closet, or recycled in a gift exchange. And we didn’t have to guess about sizes, or colors, or scents.
Reroute your holiday gifts this year. GIVE TO A CHARITY OF YOUR CHOICE🎄
