Altarena Playhouse (Alameda, CA) is holding auditions for The Thanksgiving Play by Larissa FastHorse, Directed by Kimberly Ridgeway

Performance Dates: October 25th – November 24th 2024
Non-AEA only.

Auditions (by appointment):
Saturday, June 1st, 12 pm – 3 pm
Sunday, June 2nd, 6 pm – 9 pm

Callbacks (by invitation only)
Sunday, June 9th, 7 pm

Rehearsals begin around August 26, 2024, are no more than 5 days a week, and usually Monday – Thursday evenings, Saturday afternoons, and/or Sunday evenings.

Auditions, callbacks and rehearsals will take place at the Altarena
Playhouse, 1409 High Street, Alameda, CA

About the Play:
In MacArthur Fellowship recipient Larissa FastHorse’s wickedly funny satire, good intentions collide with absurd assumptions, as a group of well-intentioned white teaching artists scramble to devise an elementary school play that celebrates both Thanksgiving and Native American Heritage Month, while avoiding any culturally appropriative missteps. Despite their eager efforts to put on the most culturally sensitive show possible, it quickly becomes clear that even those with good intent can be undone by their own blind spots.

CASTING NOTE:
Performers of all races, ethnicities and genders are encouraged to audition. In her note on casting, playwright Larissa FastHorse writes: “People of color that can pass as white should be considered”. We very much encourage actors who identify in this way to audition. Actors must have strong comedic timing/skills and an adventurous sense of play.

ROLES:
LOGAN – Female, (30-40), Caucasian looking, the high school drama teacher that’s always pushing the envelope in potentially inappropriate ways. Earnest about theatre and proving herself. “Woke,” vegan, nauseated at the mere mention of turkey.
JAXTON – Male, (30 – 40) Caucasian looking, yoga practitioner/actor. Politically correct to a fault, a big one. He’s that confident guy everyone loves, but his logical PC thinking takes weird turns. Self-described “vegan ally.”
ALICIA – Female, (20’s) Brunette, Caucasian looking but has looks that would have been cast as ethnic in 1950s movies. Without guile. Not very bright.
CADEN – Male, (30 – 40) Caucasian looking, the academic. Awkward elementary school history teacher with dramatic aspirations but no experience.

These are volunteer positions. There is a $400 expense reimbursement available for the run.
