EXPLORING SPECIALTY ORIGINS, Sumatra.

Coffee seeds first arrived in Java from India in 1696, but it was a swing and a miss; the initial plantings were wiped out by flooding. Take two, cuttings from Ceylon, arrived in 1699 with a guy named Hendrik. It’s unclear when coffee planting arrived in Sumatra specifically. Java was the coffee king of Indonesia (aka the Dutch East Indies) for at least 100 years after cuttings first arrived from Ceylon before coffee of any significant volume was grown on other islands. And well into the 20th century, much coffee grown throughout Indonesia was called Java.

EXPLORING SPECIALTY ORIGINS, Colombia.

As with many coffee origins, it is believed that coffee was first brought to Colombia by priests, arriving, perhaps, within a decade or two after coffee first came to the Americas via the Caribbean in the first half of the 17th century. It was likely a garden crop grown for local consumption and barter for decades. Unlike other coffee regions, we have the story of a priest named Francisco Romero, who could be called the father of commercial coffee cultivation in Colombia.

The folkloric tale goes that in the early 1800’s, Father Francisco, hearing confessions in the north eastern town of Salazar de la Palmas, assigned planting coffee to his parishioners as penance for their sins. The Archbishop of Colombia heard about this and ordered all priests to adopt the practice. Commercial production of coffee expanded quickly, moving into regions where the growing conditions were ideal.

EXPLORING SPECIALTY ORIGINS, Sulawesi.

Although green coffee was first planted successfully on Java around 1700, cultivation spread slowly throughout what would become the great archipelagic state of Indonesia, and did not arrive on Sulawesi, then called Celebes, until 1750, after the coffee of Java had performed its role as progenitor to the coffees of Central America and begun its ascent to being considered, alongside Arabian Mocha, as one of the best coffees in the world. In 1822, annual production on Celebes amounted to only 10,000 pounds; but by 1889, production had reached nearly 3 million pounds.

Whether you’re looking for quality and consistency in a significant blend component, or something with a little character to help round out the flavor profile of a blend, blender coffees are a good value for volume option when the sum is greater than the parts.

EXPLORING SPECIALTY ORIGINS, Rwanda.

The commercialization of coffee, always produced on smallholder farms, came about gradually in Rwanda. Independence in 1962 brought improvement to green coffee infrastructure as the government established more modern and centralizing processing.
Still, despite much of the coffee being Bourbon, there was no focus on quality until recent decades.
Rwanda’s ideal growing conditions are no longer wasted on poor processing and Rwandan specialty coffees consistently rank among the finest in the world.

Prior to 1900, coffee was essentially a garden crop in Honduras, grown on small lots of land and traded within the country for internal consumption. Less than 10 percent of the coffee harvested was exported in 1894. By 1900, exports had more than doubled, but banana was still king. A decline in banana production over the decades coincided with a slow but steady growth in coffee production. Today, Honduras is the largest coffee producer in Central America, exporting more than 5 million bags last year, and is one of the largest exporters of specialty grade coffee.
