Yesterday, our beloved Golden-Lab, Spencer, lost his eight-month battle with cancer. Spencer, who we had since he was born July 16, 2010, was the highlight of Kinsella Estates. He has an eponymous lake, vineyard and Zinfandel named for him, so he will live on in the lore of the vineyard.

He loved being on the property, riding all day on the Kubota with Raul, our amazing ranch hand, and exploring the vineyards and forests on the property.

Spencer was enormously friendly to all he met and amazingly he virtually never barked. He loved mailmen, UPS and FedEx drivers and random strangers he would encounter. He assumed everyone was a potential friend. He never threatened anyone, nor was he afraid of anyone.

We are enclosing some classic photos of Spencer for us all to remember him by.

Exciting news from the ranch! Our beautiful heirloom tomatoes are almost ready for the season – a full three weeks early! We’ve had splendid weather – plenty of sun and not too hot. Right now, the tomatoes are vibrant green, but soon they'll transform into stunning shades of red and purple. Can't wait to see them featured in your favorite dishes at local restaurants in Healdsburg! Stay tuned!

🍇🌧️ Winter News from Kinsella Estates! 🌧️🍇
We are pleased to share this update on the recent rains that have fallen in Sonoma’s Dry Creek Valley. As in most previous years, Spencer Lake filled up by the end of December, ensuring that we will have plenty of irrigation water for our 12 acres of vines for the coming season.
It continues to rain in Healdsburg so we expect a further reinforcement of our ground water reserves, raising the water table to insure that our and our neighbors’ domestic water wells are protected from going dry.
The photos show the winter vineyards resplendent in our nitrogen-fixing cover crop.

Our very healthy vineyards are about half finished with Veraison. Fortunately the Hilary tropical storm petered out in the middle of Nevada, so no rain hit Kinsella Estates. Hopefully it will stay that way until harvest is finished 🍀

We are now in full production of our fabulous, organic, Heirloom Heiress tomatoes. The Healdsburg restaurant, Spoonbar, takes most of our production and features creative dishes from Chef Tom on their daily menu. Try them out sometime!

Finally, after a wet spring and cool July, veraison has begun in the Spencer Zinfandel vineyard. It is about two weeks late. Normally, once the first purple grapes 🍇 appear, it takes 10 days for all the grapes in the cluster to turn purple and complete veraison.
Our rule-of-thumb is harvest begins 50 days after the end of veraison. This would be the first week of October which results in a later harvest for Kinsella Estates this year. Thankfully the Zin clusters look quite full and promise a bountiful harvest for the 2023 vintage.
Unfortunately, veraison has not started in the Cabernet vineyards. So, the harvest will be in mid-October.
