Future medical costs are one of the most important and most misunderstood parts of an injury claim.

When projections rest on assumptions that don't hold up, the result can cut either way: real future needs left out, or projected costs that don't align with the medical record.

From ongoing therapies and medications to equipment replacement and long-term care, these costs can shape how a case is evaluated and negotiated for either side.

We created a resource guide to help attorneys and their legal teams to flag future medical cost issues worth a second look when assessing damages and prepping for negotiations.

Continuum of Care

Future care does not always follow a straight line.

In the medical records, it often looks like this:

“Continue therapy as needed.”

“Follow up with pain management.”

“Monitor for worsening symptoms.”

“Further evaluation may be required.”

The care path is still moving.
The future cost picture may not.

That gap is where cases lose value.

In personal injury litigation, an incomplete continuum of care analysis leaves future damages underdeveloped at the negotiating table. The medical record may document ongoing treatment needs, but documentation alone doesn't quantify financial impact. That requires translating clinical recommendations into services, frequency, duration, and projected cost.

That is where a Medical Cost Projection becomes valuable.

A well -developed projection connects:

Ongoing treatment recommendations

Future follow-up care

Possible procedures or therapies

Long-term medical needs

… directly to estimated future costs.

Without it, future care may be documented clinically, but not financially.

And when that happens, the true cost of the injury can be systematically undervalued.

If you’d like support identifying and quantifying future care needs in an upcoming case - or talking through whether a Life Care Plan may be the better fit -I’d be glad to help.

Last week's Tennessee Trial Lawyers Annual Convention (June 10–12, 2026) was such a great experience.

I truly appreciated the chance to connect with incredible legal professionals, learn from industry leaders, and be part of such a meaningful event.

If you were there, it was a pleasure meeting you. A special thank you to some of my LinkedIn connections - attorneys Justin Hight, Jim McKoon, Greg Cusimano, Ronald Young, Mike Dickenson, and Sydney Raines Pierce for stopping by to say hello.

It was also great connecting with TTLA past president Jon Peeler and James Webb (attorney, Harley rider, and pickleball master!)

Grateful for all the great conversations and connections made throughout the event.

This quote is such a meaningful reminder for anyone working in the legal field.

Law is not only about rules, statutes, and arguments. It is also about real people, real injuries, real losses, and real stories behind every case file.

For legal teams, experience matters. Preparation matters. The ability to look beyond the surface and understand the full picture matters.

As we begin a new week, may this be a reminder to lead with clarity, purpose, and the kind of experience that helps bring truth into focus.

Future care needs are often one of the most closely examined parts of a case.

Whether you represent the plaintiff or the defense, having a clear, well-documented projection helps everyone work from the same set of facts and expectations.

A medical cost projection or life care plan can help:

• Outline anticipated medical and daily living needs in plain language

• Provide cost projections grounded in recognized standards and clinical experience

• Identify services, equipment, or long-term care needs that may otherwise be overlooked

The goal is clarity, consistency, and a reliable foundation for meaningful case discussions.

Latent Damages

Not every costly issue in a case announces itself loudly.

Sometimes it sits quietly in the medical record:

• “Follow-up care recommended.”

• “Pain management may continue.”

• “Future hardware revision possible.”

The treatment recommendation is there.
The future financial impact often isn’t.

That’s the nature of latent damages: future medical exposure sitting in the chart, but never fully quantified in settlement discussions.

This is where a Medical cost projection (MCP) becomes essential.

A projection translates those clinical recommendations into a clearer financial picture by connecting:

• Future treatment needs & ongoing care recommendations

• Replacement cycles

• Long-term medical exposure

…directly to estimated future costs.

Without that data, future care may remain documented medically, but undefined financially. And when the financial story stays silent, the true value of the case quietly shrink with it.

If you’d like support identifying or quantifying latent damages in your upcoming cases, feel free to reach out. I’m always glad to help!

Ongoing therapy, changing medications, evolving care needs…it adds up quickly. And trying to project those costs accurately on top of everything else can take more time than you have.

That’s why many teams choose to hand it off.

We review the records, break down the details, and deliver clear, reliable future‑cost projections you can use with confidence.

One less thing to manage-and a clearer sense of what’s ahead.
A lot more clarity.

If future costs are part of your case, it may be worth a conversation about how those costs are being addressed.
