Montana Motor Carrier Services would like to remind carriers and the public about Montanaโs Winter Weight Permit, available each year from December 1st through March 7th.
Under ARM 18.8.605, qualified vehicles may operate up to 10% above the standard weight limits outlined in Montana law.
Hereโs what you need to know:
โข The Wintertime Permit costs $50 per vehicle and is valid for 30 days, or until March 7, whichever comes first.
โข The Durational Permit costs $150 per vehicle and is valid for the entire winter permit season (December 1 through March 7).
โข Both permits apply only during the seasonal period of December 1 to March 7.
Important restrictions for divisible loads under 61โ10โ125 MCA:
โข These permits are not valid on the interstate system, only non-interstate highways.
โข They cannot be used to increase any existing overweight or tolerance permit.
โข Permits may be suspended statewide based on temperature conditions and early thawing of Montana roads. Carriers must check MDT or county websites for updates.
โข Not valid on posted bridges or roads that have specific weight restrictions.
