Every year volunteers place wildflower markers along the lower trails of our mountain for school kids taking end-of-year hikes. A few years ago they started putting a map and qr code at the trailhead so anyone could follow along and learn something interesting as they hiked.

I've been trying to learn the names of these wildflowers for years, and I remember one or two more each spring on my hikes.

My favorites are the plants and flowers that look like their name, like rabbitfoot crazyweed, fuzzy tongue penstamon, and arrowleaf balsamroot.

“I’ve had “ah ha” moments in my life that led me to make crazy decisions. Some of them didn’t go so well... 😉 ...most of them did because I trusted my heart.”

I love sharing my ah ha moments with friends to get their take on my crazy ideas, and I especially appreciate the ones who ask the right questions after saying something like: "Wow! That sounds amazing, how can I help?"

I'm in the "third act" of my career, and I know exactly who I need in my inner circle.

Who are you surrounding yourself with to offer different perspectives while supporting your crazy ideas and championing you when you're not in the room?

"... we talk about feelings, but... At the end, every feeling has an underlying need. If it's a pleasant feeling, it's a met need. If it's an unpleasant feeling, it's an unmet need. And needs drive our behavior."

What an eye-opening and inspiring episode Morgane Borzée from Equanima on this week's Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will podcast.

You won't want to miss this, friends.

“That’s something we’ve learned about community, is that it’s not just us... there’s skill building you can ... do on your own... but... we really encourage our members to actually make things and actually do the thing and do the thing together.”

You can read instruction manuals and watch videos about driving, but until you get behind the wheel, you can't learn to drive. And you don't drive alone - you MUST be aware of people and cars around you.

It's the same with everything, and Lynn Harris, founder of GOLD Comedy, especially encourages us to remember this with humor and comedy. You can't really do this alone, not if your intention is to make others laugh.

And boy do we need this right now.

People don’t just listen to what you say…

they watch what you do.

Especially your kids!

Especially the people closest to you.

Showing up. Trying something new.

Doing the hard thing even when you’re not good at it.

That’s what sticks.

Not perfection, not raw talent - courage and consistency.

“What I have been taught again and again is to try as much as possible to really wait for their personality to emerge, to wait for the real person to emerge. Don’t hurry it along and don’t make any judgments.”

This week's episode of Your Stories Don't Define You featuring Neal Foard is full of great reminders like this one.

When we anchor people in a label based on an initial interaction, on a single social media post or comment, or someone else's opinion, we miss out on all the potential of a meaningful relationship.

And worse, we become ridiculous hypocrites.

After all, we don't want to be judged and labeled like that, right? We see ourselves in all of our complexities and contradictions, so why do we have such a hard time appreciating and noticing those in others?

Don't miss this episode, and ask yourself: "Did I anchor someone in time? Am I holding onto a label that might not fit?"

When you share your story with intention… it does more than connect.

It gives permission.

Permission for someone else to:

• rethink their past

• stop hiding

• move forward

You’re not defined by your hardest moment.

You’re defined by what you do after it.

And someone out there is waiting to see what that looks like!

Something happened.

It mattered.

It shaped you but it doesn’t have to define you.

The real story isn’t what you went through. It’s what you did next.

That shift alone changes everything.

The moment you separate your identity from your experience… you take your power back!

What’s something you’ve moved through that no longer defines you?

We don’t have to agree, but we do need to learn how to disagree with respect and patience.

Try curiosity over criticism, respect over reaction, and conversation over conflict.

Matthew Johnson says that the work that truly matters - the kind that positively shapes communities - depends on people staying in the conversation.

Even when it’s hard!
