Montana Biological Survey

Montana Biological Survey MBS is a small environmental consulting business that specializes in fisheries and aquatic ecological studies across the intermountain west.

It has been my full-time gig since 2016.

MBS is just back from a mussel sampling trip in the W.F. Bitterroot Watershed for some western pearlshells, and found some recent reproduction, yay!!! Baby mussels😃
We couldn't get these in-depth surveys done in 2024, because they were messing with the water levels, so it's the first time we've been back to these sites since 2014!!
A few of our previously defined 'C-viable' populations (i.e., think school grades---not great 😕) have showed some recent reproduction with a slight bump in numbers of individuals too, maybe not up to a 'B-viable' pops (good), but maybe a C++ (better than a C, not quite a B) --recent successful reproductive events (5-6 years ago have produced mussels in the 25-29mm range, and another batch from 10-12 years ago--34-39mm, yay :)
Look at these cuties :)

MBS has had a couple of weeks of fun fish sampling with the crew on Long-term monitoring projects, always fun when the crew is clicking along and having a good time.... that's what it is all about; even though it's work, you may as well enjoy it, because it's sure better than being stuck in an office 😃

MT Biological Survey processed 54 McNeil core samples from the Missouri and Marias Rivers taken in April and May (a total dry weight of >1400 lbs. of sediment was sieved, fractionized and weighed) and is moving forward on summer projects. Long-running projects: Tintina BBC, Northwestern Energy and Clark Fork River, as well as a new Baseline Sentinel Metals exploration project near Helena over in Lincoln. MBS understands the controversial legacy of mining in MT; we see it all around us (see Seven-Up Pete Mine photos). We strive to collect rigorous baseline aquatic community data to enable comparisons to future conditions should projects move forward. See you out there.....

MBS folks were out on the Missouri River the last few weeks taking McNeil sediment cores (to estimate rainbow trout redd egg survival) from Holter Dam downstream to Pelican Point and on to Cascade. Nice to have an early field project with the springtime weather. Marias River next up in about a week......
