- The Williams Family

It was such a great experience working with this family. They really pushed through during the difficult moments, stayed consistent, and we’re able to see success! A big pat on the back to the Williams family.

New Testimonial 🎉

This comes from a family that took advantage of my free 15 minute “get to know you” consult. With just a little guidance and advice they were able to tackle their 2.5 year old son’s sleep issues on their own!

Helping families through education is what I enjoy most about sleep consulting.

Curious if your family could benefit? Schedule a consult on my website and we can go through your options.

✨ New Testimonial ✨

I love hearing from families that are continuing to see success on their own in their sleep training journey.

My goal is always geared toward support and education for families. Sleep training isn’t a moment with an end, but rather a positive change in family routines and dynamics.

New testimonial ❤️

It was so amazing watching these new, first time parents support their little girl in a way that was most comfortable for them.

Even with all the obstacles (daycare, work, life) that we didn’t have control over they stayed consistent with the plan and realistic in what was in their control. In doing this they were able to give their little girl the best possible sleep.

I feel so fortunate to be able to share my knowledge and experiences to help families. 🥰

One of the most common reasons given by parents for night wakings is teething. However, this is a common misconception. Teething doesn’t typically disrupt sleep for more than 1-3 nights.

So how can you tell if teething is disrupting your little ones sleep?

🌟 You can feel a tooth about to break through the gums

Or

🌟They are showing signs of discomfort during the day (more emotional, biting on everything, etc.)

If frequent night wakings, early wakes, or bedtime struggles are happening for longer than 3 days there may be a different issue to address.

Is your preschooler having a difficult time staying in their bedroom after you’ve gone through the bedtime routine and said “goodnight”?

A bedtime pass is a great tool to introduce!

A bedtime pass is essentially just that, a one time only pass that is allowed to be exchanged for a predetermined item or interaction.

This can be personalized to your child’s unique needs but I always make my bedtime passes redeemable for…..

1 last kiss, hug, tuck-in, or book.

There are so many benefits of the bedtime pass though! Including….

✨Validating your child’s feelings by offering them a way to communicate their needs in a concrete way

✨When the choices and boundaries are clear for both child and parent they are easier to stick to

✨You will be able to notice the nights your child uses their pass to asses what is different from the nights they do not feel the need to use one

✨By offering your child this tool you are strengthening your parent/child bond through age appropriate communication and responsive parenting

Pro tip:

🌟 Provide a fixed number of bedtime passes (3 or 4) so that your child can practice reflecting on their needs, without having the ability to use a pass each night.

🌟 Once your child uses a bedtime pass they will not get it back until the following week.

Capping a nap is when you go in and wake up your child from their nap after a certain amount of time.

I typically don’t recommend capping naps unless one of the following is happening….

✨ They are napping so long into the afternoon that it is pushing bedtime too late

✨ It is a special circumstance and you have to wake your child to leave the house

✨ Your child is in the transition of dropping a nap

✨ Your child is in the newborn stage and is experiencing day/night confusion

If your child is having an extra long nap one day then I say let them sleep! Sleep begets sleep and your child may be adjusting to some development changes or a recently busy schedule.

Also children have different sleep needs so if your child takes long naps but is still sleeping well at night they may be on the heavier end of the sleep needs spectrum.

When it comes to infant sleep what works one week may suddenly hit a bump the next.

Don’t get discouraged! There is so much mental and physical development happening in the first year it can sometimes make you question what you’re doing when it comes to sleep.

Here is some advice….

✨Stay consistent in the routine so that your baby begins to learn the signals for bedtime

✨Be mentally present so that you can observe any changes in behaviors or needs and shift accordingly

✨ Learn about different milestones that happen in the first year such as rolling, crawling, and sitting. These can all have an affect on sleep but don’t necessarily mean you need to change your sleep routine.

✨ When in doubt reach out to a qualified professional. The first year is a great time to establish healthy sleep habits and for parents to learn key skills. This can set you up for great sleep in the years to come!

“Sleepy ques” are a great way your baby uses non verbal communication to express that they are getting tired.

There are 2 types of sleepy cues, EARLY cues and LATE cues.

Some early cues are….

Moving their head side to side
Zoning out
Rubbing their eyes and/or nose
Tugging on their ear
Redness around the eyebrows

Some late cues are….

Yawning
Crying
Hyper activity
Being hard to calm

Aim to get your little one to sleep when you notice their early sleepy cues to avoid over tiredness and bedtime struggles.

Lastly, remember each child has unique sleepy cues so watch for your child’s personalized cues (they might not be on this list).

Visuals are a great tool to use during your toddler / preschooler bedtime routine.

They can help…

✨Reduce bedtime struggles

✨Act as reminders for the whole family

✨Help children to become more independent

✨ Increase behaviors you want to see

✨ Provide clear rules and/or expectations

✨ Support relationship and time management
