I was researching hydrogen peroxide/ blue spectrum light whitening techniques and after digging through the recent cgc forums on the topic - hard pass. Leave that stuff alone. While digging I stumbled into the fascinating world of YouTube pressing & restoration videos. Wow. F**k me. The amount of disinformation (whether intentional or what I assume in most cases - ignorance) is shocking. Watched a guy - who’s on IG - swear you need to leave books in the press for 16 hours on both sides “or else!” 😂 watched another guy proceed to fire modern books in at 164 for 10 minutes only to then remove the book hot and place it under acrylic pads under shake weights. Guys- let me put it this way - there are a LOT of ways to skin a cat and if you’re getting results using a technique you’ve taught yourself through trial and error - by all mean carry on! However- if you’re like the YouTube videos I watched and you’re cooking books based on old wives tales, hearsay and conjuncture just holler at someone that knows what they’re doing before launching a YouTube pressing channel, you’ll be doing the community (not to mention our depleting inventories of old books) a huge a favor. Rant over. Here’s a I did for the PC about 6 months ago.

Realized I haven’t posted in a while … because ALL I’ve been doing is working on comic books. Not a complaint- I love my job. Anyway here’s the worst book I’ve ever worked on. Swipe for additional photos- It’ll always be low grade but no longer trash & definitely got a second lease on life. Collect & preserve friends!

Hey gang! Thought I’d share this heavy client restoration. This guy had 60+ year old algebra homework indented into the cover through the first 5 pages of the book. Add marvel chipping around the entirety of both covers, questionable cover staple connections, light water damage and extremely brittle paper quality and you’ve got a perfect recipe for major improvement. Nothing more satisfying than giving an important book like this another lease on life. Collect & preserve my friends!

So I bought this one for the PC off eBay, it was a PGX 5.0, highly questionable grade (note before photo) aside, I’m hyped to finally have a 1/2 decent raw copy. Such a cool book. Now the search begins for a Marvel Spotlight 5 in 2022! 💀🔥🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾

“Gil Kane and Dave Cockrum introduced the all-new X-Men team”
In the summer of 1983 I
Discovered Wolverine through my garage sale Incredible Hulk collection. I had two 181s as a nine year old and was about to set out on a mission for GSX1 - That summer I mowed hundreds of miles of grass. Countless odd jobs, loose change embezzlement and allowance saving later I had my money right and mom took me to and I purchased my very own NM GSX1 for $60. After getting home my mom realized I spent all of my money on one comic book- she immediately thought the guys at the shop ripped me off and was about to drag me back to return it when I was able to quickly reference the current Overstreet guide and show her it was actually worth $65 and I “got a deal!” Anyway, just thought I’d share that with you guys- I always think of that story every time I work on one of these. It’s amazing all the cool memories looking at a simple comic book can trigger. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

There are levels to this people. I’d like to make something perfectly clear- we’re not just firing books into a press over here.Look closely at the spine, I take every step I can to exceed our clients expectations - often times spending several days on just 1 book. Why the hell would someone do that? Simple, I love comics. Restoration for the homies Big shout out to the missed you guys, it’s cool to be back.

I just completed 14, yes 14 of these. All heavy water damaged, pages locked, brittle and acidic, in my opinion un-sellable. A week later they’re all sharp copies with an average condition of an honest 4.5-6.0 range. If you have damaged keys you thought were unfixable, you may have thought wrong - hit me up and let’s make magic! 💫💥👊🏾🙏🏾💯 website link in bio ✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️

BEFORE & AFTER BATMAN 227.
Oftentimes I will receive a book that no matter what we do to it, it’ll always be low grade. This is often due to extreme wear, color breaks, tears, missing pages etc. and while they always 100% “show better” after restoration - the existing unfix-able defects will always hold it back from receiving a higher grade. Some facts to consider when choosing books for restoration...Silver age and Bronze age ink quality and paper thickness generally lends them to the most dramatic improvements. To maximize your restorations look for books with wrinkling, bends, creases, dimples, non staining water damage, corner crunch, newsprint scuffing, pencil marks, indentations (often from tracing lines) , non-color breaking spine tics, spine roll, overhang bends, Acidity (old comic book smell) and warping as these are all correctable defects. I bought this issue raw as a 3.5, grading company says 6.5 after the work. This was a worthwhile restoration on an awesome key book in my opinion. Check out the new website and let me know via DM if you have questions regarding restorations- THE REPAIR SHOP IS OPEN! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

“How much better can you make my book?”
It depends entirely on the book. Each individual book’s defects predicate it’s potential, in other words - some books have more room for improvement than others. I can say with certainty that regardless of your book’s current overall condition, it will improve significantly. Here are a few popular defects we can fix.
In nearly all cases, bends, dents and non-color breaking creases can be completely removed. Ink reflectivity and overall cover gloss is always increased as is the subtlety of pages. Surface imperfections such as dimples and wrinkling are always corrected. The book will always be flat with a natural rounded spine. All “Acidity” smells (better known as “old comic smell” are removed through the steam cleaning process) Yes, “smell” is actually a gradable thing now and for your book to hit 6.0 or higher it cannot have “any hint of acidity in the odor of the newsprint”
Surface dirt, grime build up & newsprint scuffing (which can be severe on otherwise perfect books) are removed. Bend damage caused from overhang/overlap to the covers or pages is corrected. Spine rolls are corrected. Water damage (not water stains) such as extreme warping and waviness can in most cases be totally corrected.

Hyped to see this book heating up, definitely one of my favorites as a little kid. Considering a crack and clean on this one (I’m always fascinated to see a well pressed book where they didn’t bother cleaning it, got white pages here - the newsprint scuffing in n the covers is the only thing holding this baby back from a higher grade. See you soon 👍🏾👍🏾
