The Little Things Matter: A Lesson in Accountability from My Son's Homework
Tuesday night, my son had homework for the first time since going back to school. Eager to get it done, he headed upstairs as soon as we got home. About 45 minutes later, he proudly came back down and declared, “I’m done!”
Naturally, I asked to check it. As I looked through his work, I noticed a few things: his handwriting was barely legible, two questions were left unanswered, and the ones he did complete lacked any serious effort.
It was a classic case of trying to get something off his plate as quickly as possible. But it got me thinking about how we, as adults, sometimes approach our work the same way.
Do we rush through tasks just to say they’re done, without really considering the quality of our output? Or do we take the time to ensure every detail is in place, knowing that how we handle the small things reflects how we approach everything else?
Here are 5 tips to help you follow through and be strategic in your work:
1. Slow Down to Speed Up: Quality takes time. Slowing down to do things right the first time can save you from having to redo them later.
2. Pay Attention to Detail: Just like legible handwriting matters in homework, the small details in your work can make a big difference. Don’t overlook them.
3. Prioritize Completion: Finish what you start, and do it well. Unanswered questions (or incomplete tasks) leave room for missed opportunities.
4. Invest in Effort: Even in routine tasks, put in the effort as if it’s a critical project. This builds a habit of excellence.
5. Reflect and Improve: After completing a task, review your work. What could you have done better? Use that insight to improve next time.
Remember, the way we do the little things is how we do everything. Whether it’s homework or a major project, take pride in your work, stay accountable, and strive for excellence in every detail.
