Dolly Parton's giving started with her daddy.

Robert Lee Parton couldn't read or write. "Daddy was a very smart man, but he was ashamed that he couldn't read or write," she told Oprah in 2020. "I remember thinking, I need to do something."

So she did. The Imagination Library has mailed more than 270 million free books to children, and it still sends over 3 million every month. Free to every family, whatever they earn, because she never wanted another kid to see that shame in someone they love.

One person. One barrier she refused to accept. Generations of children who grew up with books in the mailbox.

Americans gave a record $617.2 billion to charity in 2025. That should feel like a win. So why does it feel like we're just reading a spreadsheet?

Here's the number that should really get our attention: bequest giving jumped 19.7% to $62.19 billion, the fastest-growing source of giving in this year's Giving USA report. And it's not a coincidence — by 2030, all Baby Boomers will be older than 65, nearly 20% of the entire country (U.S. Census Bureau).
