Silage harvest is well underway, and with the frost/freeze we experienced last night and with more potential frosty nights tonight and over the next 10 days, we're rapidly making our way into the heart of the harvest season - for not only silage, but grain crops as well. I saw lots of corn and soybean stubble driving through the region yesterday, and I know I'll see even more this afternoon. I've seen some cover crops up and out of the ground already, and I'm looking forward to seeing more winter crops emerging in the coming weeks. This is the last field crop update of the year. Another reminder about the effects of rain on corn silage dry-down following dry conditions: If the crop is less than mature enough to begin its true, physiological dry-down phase (DM in the 20s), the typical dry-down (0.5% DM increase per day) may not be as predictable. And when plants are stressed, DM may not rise as quickly as you would expect. And a shot of rain like we're having this week may actually delay true dry-down as the plant simply reinvigorates its development. If a plant is truly in the dry-down phase, rain shouldn't affect that rate of 0.5% DM increase per day too much. So, as ever, keep an eye on DM and on the forecast!

Fall armyworm numbers dropped in Saratoga Co, indicating that larvae are likely hatching now - so even though the numbers in the trap were definitely not huge last week, we might expect to start seeing damage very soon if there are higher populations in certain locations.

We have a few reports of silage being harvested across the state, so harvest season is here! Most of us have some ways to go yet, but with your silking date in mind, check out the GDD chart in section 3 to see how close crops in your area may be to peak maturity. The earliest planted acres in the Mohawk Valley and northern Madison Co are very close to harvest.
