Folks in the Northern Hemisphere are inching closer to the winter solstice (Dec. 21), which is the shortest period of daylight during the year.

The winter solstice, which is also known as midwinter, marks the first day of "astronomical" winter. This is different from "meteorological" winter, a term used by meteorologists and climatologists, who break the seasons into three-month periods based on the annual temperature cycle and the calendar.

Himawari-8 spotted the moon peeping out from behind the Earth in the Southern Hemisphere, which is tilting toward the sun.

That recent storm that dumped over a foot of in parts of the Mid-Atlantic? You can see which areas are currently a winter wonderland (or not) in today's view from our GOES East satellite.

Many locations in southern Virginia and western North Carolina picked up more snow last weekend than they usually get in an entire winter. The National Weather Service reported 15.0 inches fell in Roanoke, Virginia in 24 hours, while 11.5 inches fell in Richmond and 12.8 inches in Greensboro, NC.

Thanks to clear, sunny skies over the Mid-Atlantic today, we can see which areas have snow on the ground from 22,000 miles in space!

Update on : NOAA is targeting January 2019 to declare satellite operational.

Our newest geostationary satellite, which is already providing groundbreaking high-resolution images of Alaska, Hawaii and the Pacific, will continue to undergo several weeks of testing before it is officially declared NOAA's GOES West satellite.
