Not all turnovers are bad.

In a product-focused business, the goal is to experience high inventory turnover.

In football, when there’s just minutes on the clock in a one-possession game, the team that’s down is gunning for a turnover.

In life, a reset is often required—extending to the downcast or weary, a fresh start. This is the turning over of a new leaf that gives second chances to those who have been knocked down but not knocked out.

In the world of food, I have a bias, a hill I’ll die on that I will always believe that the best turnover ever invented in the kitchen is indeed the Jamaican Beef Patty!

However, on June 4, I won’t be speaking on any of these turnovers. Instead, I’ll walk us through how to stop one of the worst kinds we can experience as ministry and nonprofit leaders. The Volunteer Turnover!

Join me at the Youth Ministry Consultants virtual chat to dive into how we go beyond recruiting volunteers to retaining them. It’s time to make the spaces we invite volunteers into feel like home.

Freedom (frēodōm). It combines two root parts: root frēo meaning “free” or a “dear” or “loved” member of the family or household (as opposed to a servant or slave) and the suffix -dōm meaning the “state” or “condition”.

Therefore, when combined, FREEDOM translates to the state of being free or the condition of being beloved/not enslaved.

Isn’t it funny how free in itself means without cost, yet the state or condition of being free is bound to cost us something, if not EVERYTHING!

Thank you to all those who have paid and are paying the price.

Happy Memorial Day!

1994 was a phenomenal year for the boy band All 4 One. They released one of the most successful ballads in music history, charting at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 11 weeks straight, and today, 32 years later, the song has secured over 305 million streams on Spotify. Billboard ranks it among the top 100 songs of all time! Not too shabby for a few guys who started out making radio jingles.

Due to its sultry sound and lyrics that expressed undying dedication to a proclaimed love, it became a must-play at weddings worldwide. DJs of the 90’s knew without request that if this wasn’t a first-dance song, it must have a place within the playlist. The song became the vow after the official vows.

There’s something about an unwavering promise, an unbreakable dedication, and an unshakable commitment that draws us in. It's literally what the grounds of trust are built on. These words of hopeless devotion strung over a beautiful melody captured the hearts of its listeners, and so do the bonds we build with those we serve. Instead, for us, the soothing tune our words are laid over our ability to keep the vows we make.

Being a promise keeper, not just a promise maker, has always been and will forever be a brand’s distinction. I see it with those I get to serve. Words formed through AI, put out into the ether and presented as their own, but can’t necessarily be implemented. In short, we’ve now made a promise, a vow that we are unwilling or worst, unable to keep. Yet, the expectation has already been set and the mood established. Backpedaling will only do more damage than good.

Another lesson learned: Two faces will never be better than one. Presenting one way and walking another will always diminish and water down a brand, no matter what industry you’re in. Pick a face. Stick with it. I swear, it’s the better way to go! Otherwise, it will cost you.

Of course, I have more to say about this: https://lnkd.in/eyb_nPTc

I had some fun a few weeks ago in Minnesota. Hung out with a few other ministry leaders, caught up with a friend and colleague I hadn’t seen in 6 years, and spent some time in front of the camera vs. behind. I was given the privilege to speak out about the difference between multicultural and intercultural. Given our current climate, it was such a breath of fresh air to do a deep dive into defining and comparing the two, and assessing which camp we live in when it comes to our churches, our lives, and our current generation.

When it was all said and done, here was my big takeaway: “I just went there,” I thought. “I just sat in the uncomfortable, spoke my heart on what can feel like a formidable topic, and was gifted with the opportunity to be heard.”

What if we did that more? What if we were the gift givers? What if we gave away opportunities for others to be heard more often? And, in this act of kindness, we chose not only to hear our speaker, but to actually listen. The two skillsets are different. When we listen, we are selecting to actively mull over what is uttered, to weigh it against our own ideals and beliefs, and to see as our counterpart sees. It isn’t an in-one-ear-and-out-the-other moment. It isn’t a checklist act just to say, “We talked.” Listening is considering.

Every GREAT leader that I have been blessed to follow does this so well. They heed the words of those around them to include their followers. They are bold and brave enough to contemplate the thoughts of others. I met a VP of Marketing recently who shared with me that, regularly, she looks at her team and asks this very real, outlandish question: “What is it like being led by me?” She sits, and she waits for honest answers. Why? Because her team’s input and experience will form her into an even better leader.

That’s the art of listening. It only makes us better. It’s what grows my marketing chops. When I listen to my audience and apply change accordingly. It’s what develops me as a mom. When I listen to my daughter and apply change accordingly. It’s what will make us stronger as a society. When we listen to each other and apply change accordingly.

Want to lead? Listen. Want to serve? Listen. Want to grow? Listen. No matter how fast our world evolves or how quickly technology redefines our space, this one thing will never get old or pass away—Listening to one another!

Here's a lesson plan from Disney's *Frozen*. Yep, you heard right. The 2013 animated flick is more than just enjoyable entertainment for children. Believe it or not, Anna and Elsa have something to say about leading our organizations and challenging ourselves while there. There's a message for us grown-ups seeped in between the lines.

The film takes us on a journey with Elsa, the Ice Queen, which leads to the discovery of her true potential. But this only occurs when she emerges from isolation. It's outside of her self-imposed cage where she taps into her full potential and plunges into a world she never knew awaited her. There, on the other side of her locked doors, Elsa boldly declares that she can no longer be held back anymore and that the fear that once controlled her has been left behind in the coop she was told to hide within.

We, too, can unleash our capacity for innovation and growth by venturing beyond our familiar surroundings. Remaining in our comfort zones can lead to stagnation, often fueled by complacency, anxiety, or unwarranted self-satisfaction. This mindset keeps us stuck in our groundhog days, repeating the same cycle day after day, year after year. It prevents us from exploring greater, climbing higher, and serving BEST.

However, when we "go outside and play," we unlock new experiences and open ourselves up to untapped opportunities. When we venture beyond our false boundaries, we embrace the unknown and transform possibilities into our lived reality. It's time to step out and see what magic awaits. So, c'mon, let's go outdoors and play. Who knows? You just might end up building a never-before-seen, one-of-a-kind snowman! 😉

came, wind blew, but my house was built on You. This is the first refrain in the bridge of the song Firm Foundation by Maverick City. It's a beautiful song reminding us that, no matter the conditions around us, when our lives are built on the One who is immovable and unshakable, we, too, can't be moved. The storms of life may blow, huff and puff, but our house won't go down!

Hurricane Melissa raged through the tiny island of Jamaica on October 28, wreaking havoc on anything and anyone in its way. For most of us, this event is now a distant memory that broke our hearts when we heard the news, and we wished the people of the country well as we moved on with life. However, for others, our connection to the island runs deeper. Our aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, siblings, and parents—our loved ones—are all part of the heartbeat of Jamaica.

As I delight in the relief that those close to me weren't affected by the complete destruction, I am fully aware that this isn't everyone's story. Homes completely gone, lives lost, hospitals swallowed up, churches vanished, and hope hanging on by a thread. My most resounding desire is to revive and refresh a hope that never fades or gets blown away—not only in prayer but also in action. I want to remind an entire island that it still stands. Amid the debris and vacant lots is a foundation that can't be shaken, and neither can it be destroyed.

The remainder of that bridge gives reason for hope, "I'm safe with You. I'm gonna make it through." Home isn't relegated to a structure alone. Where arms are opened wide, home is there. Where words uttered build up in lieu of tearing down, home is there. Where safety rests, home is there. Where security is given, home is there. Where love resides, home is there.

On this , could I challenge us to be home for a people who have lost the very concept of such? Could our extended hands be a house for them that cannot be tossed by the winds or eradicated by the waves?

On this , together we can make a lasting impact—bringing hope, help, and love to Jamaica. Hey, Jamaica! You're not forgotten.
