Here’s a reminder.
Be considerate of the person on the pad. One distraction that I notice is this.
When you are “up next”, and have a hard bottomed pouch.
Try to not run your fingers around through the shells.
It can be really noisy and distracting.
I know that it’s most likely not intentional. But much like clicking a pen or tapping a pencil. You don’t even realize that you’re doing it. But boy oh boy, everyone else sure does!!!

S***t Protocol and Etiquette Part 5

It is a great reminder on the etiquette side of things!

This quick tip from s***t legend Robert Paxton is not about rules, but rather about etiquette. Specifically, he addresses some tips for what to do when two squads are shooting on adjacent fields and end up relatively close to each other, such as when one is on station 6 and the other is on station 2. “You really need to be aware of what the squad on the next field is doing,” he says. “Good s***t etiquette means not yelling loudly and distracting the squad that’s right on the other side of the fence … and when you go to collect your shells between rounds, be aware of what the other field is doing, and hopefully they’ll do it for you.”

Where to stand….

When on stations 1 and 7 you should be lined up next to the shooter. In the order you are going to shoot.

2-6 and station 8. You should be standing directly behind the shooter.

As soon as current shooter leaves pad, next shooter should enter.

In the spirit of keeping a good rhythm.

I have found that the camaraderie in s***t is second to none. What other sport do you see opponents cheering each other on? (i.e. shoot offs).

I have to bring up fist bumping though. Again, it is a great practice. However, if you are the lead off shooter and you stand at the current station waiting for the last shooter to finish so you can fist bump before moving to the next station, you are slowing the squad more than you realize.

Once you’ve shot, move 1/3 of the way to the next station.

As soon as the last shooter leaves the previous station, advance to the next. Have 2 shells in your hand. Unless you are a single holer. Then have 1.

You can step on the pad. But don’t load the gun until the referee has arrived. (And of course all is clear and safe).

After you’re done on this station would be a great time to do the fist bumps.

More on S***t Protocol and Etiquette!

This is a rule commonly violated. Per the shoot schedule, a squad gets 90 minutes to shoot their 100 targets.

A: Be 10 minutes early to your field.

B: Be ready to go. Correct tubes, ammo, eyes and ears

C: from the moment you step on the pad you get 10 seconds to call for the bird. When only 2 birds, you should be off the pd in 20 seconds. If doubles are thrown too, off the pad in 30.

D: 20 minutes to complete1 round. Including breaks.

Slow Squads It is suggested that shoot management use substitute fields when breakdowns or unusually slow shooting squads are disrupting the normal sequence of squads. Under normal conditions, a squad should complete a round in 20 minutes, including breaks between rounds. Squads using more time cannot object to being transferred to a substitute field.

This will begin a series of posts from an NSSA Referee related to S***t Protocol and Etiquette!

I am an NSSA certified referee.

I was asked if I would periodically mention some commonly disregarded rules. And some etiquette expectations.

I said that I thought that was a good idea. I'll also be happy to answer specific questions that you may have.

Rule

Eye and Ear Protection

A. All persons (including shooters, referees and trap personnel) must wear some form of adequate eye and ear protection on a s***t range at a shoot sanctioned by NSSA.

B. Apple Air-pods and similar earbuds are not adequate ear protection unless custom molded to provide hearing protection. Earbuds specifically designed to offer hearing protection are acceptable. C. While on the s***t field, the referee must wear adequate eye and ear protection
