Simple Tips to Keep Your Washing Machine Washing

Below are some tips for how to maintain your washing machine so you can get the most out of it and keep it in tip-top shape.

Don’t Leave Clothes in It

If you think that the clothes left in your washer are doing no harm, think again. Clothes left in the washer can cause damage to your washing machine and result in broken or damaged components.

The first thing that happens when you leave clothes in the washer is that they start to smell. The smell will stay on the clothing and become even stronger if it is not washed for a long time. This makes it smell even worse than if you had just left them dirty.

The second issue is that moisture from wet or damp clothing can cause mold and mildew to grow inside the washing machine. This will cause a foul odor as well as damage parts of your machine over time if not cleaned properly immediately after use.

Replace The Water Hoses

Check your washer hoses regularly for bulging, cracking, and leaks. Replace them as needed or every three to five years as part of a preventative maintenance program. Also make sure there’s at least four inches between your washer and the wall to prevent hoses from kinking.

Clean The Lint Filter

Yes, your washer has a lint collector. Depending on your machine it may be located in the agitator tube which is the center column, or near the top of the washtub. Keeping this clean helps the machine run efficiently.

Leave The Door Or Lid Open After Each Load

Leaving the washer open allows for circulation and prevents mold and mildew growth. One of the biggest mistakes people make is closing the lid immediately after using it. They think it will prevent dirt and dust buildup inside of the machine, which is true to an extent. Allowing the air to get into the machine for about half an hour removes the moisture and prevents bacteria build up.

Summary

If you're a homeowner, chances are that you have a washing machine. The fact of the matter is simple; keeping your washing machine clean and well maintained can have a significant effect on its lifespan and your overall home maintenance costs.

Pointers for Keeping Your Oven Functioning for Years

Your oven is a loyal worker to your everyday food needs. It makes hearty lasagna for family dinner, heats up frozen pizza for movie nights, and bakes cookies when you can’t resist that sweet tooth. With everything your oven does to feed you and your family, you want to keep it running smoothly for a long time. Give your oven a little love and care with proper and consistent maintenance.

So, how do you properly maintain your oven to prolong its life?

The first and most basic step is to clean it, inside and out, regularly. Oven components also need to be inspected regularly and replaced when necessary. We will go over these maintenance tips and more in detail below.

Clean Stovetop and Oven Routinely

Your oven and stovetop suffer through spills, overflowing casseroles, and fallen pie crust pieces often. These spills burn and crust onto oven racks and drip pans, and then continue to reburn with every subsequent meal. Not only can this burnt food release odors that affect the taste of future meals, but they can also affect the efficiency of the oven and consume more energy.

For the stovetop, it is good practice in sanitation to clean up food debris right after you are finished cooking. For the inside of the oven, it should also be cleaned right after you are finished cooking, including the racks if necessary, but do wait for it to cool off first. The inside of the oven should also be deep cleaned two to three times a year depending on your use and its condition to ensure it continues heating efficiently for years.

Resist the Self-Cleaning Feature

Some ovens have a self-cleaning feature where they heat up to extremely high temperatures, 600 to 800 degrees Fahrenheit, in order to burn off leftover food particles. Using this high of temperatures often wears out components and reduces the lifespan of the oven. It is recommended that you wash the oven by hand and forego the self-cleaning feature.

Inspect and Replace the Gas Line

Every time you buy a new oven, it is a good idea to update the gas line as well. As ovens wear out or breakdown, so do gas lines. By replacing the gas line at the same time you replace the oven, you reduce the potential for future leaks. If you have an oven that has not been replaced in a while, it is good practice to check the gas line regularly for leaks and replace it if necessary.

Inspect and Replace Door Gaskets

The oven gasket is the rubber seal that runs along the outer edge of the door. It seals the oven, keeping the heat inside for efficiency and making your home cooler when it is in use. Every time you deep clean your oven (should be two to three times a year), be sure to inspect the gasket for any cracks, wear, or breaks. If you find any, be sure to replace the gasket before the next use.

Inspect Stovetop Burners

Stovetop burners can wear out just like gas lines and gaskets. If you have a gas stove, be sure to clean the burners thoroughly as debris and liquids can get stuck in them and cause them to stop working. If you notice any areas that are getting hotter than others or an area that appears redder in electric stoves, replace the element as it could short out, spark, and cause flame.

Clean Sides, Hood, and Underneath the Oven

All types of food debris get flung around when you are in the cooking zone. You don’t have time to clean sauce splatter or pick up every pasta noodle that succumbs to the void on the side of the oven. After you have finished making your delicious meal, cleaned the stove, and done the dishes though, don’t forget about those stray crumbs.

Crumbs on the side of the oven and underneath as well as dust on the hood can impede air flow and make the oven less efficient, so make sure to clean those areas. Even if you don’t have the energy after a long night of cooking, make it a priority to complete during your weekly cleaning routine.

Recap

Ovens are an essential kitchen tool for everyday life, and you want them to last you for years (it is not exactly cheap to purchase a new one.) Be sure to take care of it with the maintenance tips outlined above so you and your family can enjoy the delicious food it serves.

What’s Wrong With My Clothes Dryer?

You pulled your clothes out of the washing machine and put them into the dryer. Then, you set the timer and press the start button. Nothing. Again, you press the start button. Nothing again. You start to panic because your dryer isn’t turning on as it should.

One of the first things you do is check the obvious and make sure it’s not unplugged and that the fuse in the breaker box associated with this house area isn’t the problem. Everything seems to be okay with those things.

So, what’s wrong with your clothes dryer?

Here is a look at some of the common issues with your dryer, how to fix them, and what to do when purchasing a new one.

Common Clothes Dryer Problems

If your dryer isn’t working correctly, there could be numerous problems. Some of the issues will require a dryer maintenance person to repair them, which, according to Home Advisor, cost several hundred dollars, with most people paying on average $180 to fix whatever is wrong. However, there are a few dryer problems that could be easy fixes. They are as follows.

Dryer Won’t Turn On – Broken Dryer Door Switch

One of the most common problems you will run into with dryers is that they won’t start. While it may be tempting to go and buy a new one, this may not be necessary. Sometimes you can fix this problem with a little bit of troubleshooting.

How to Fix It

The reason why your dryer may not be turning on is that the dryer can’t sense that the door is closed. If you know that the door is shut tight but still isn’t working, it could be a door sensor issue. Your dryer door switch may be broken and needs replacement. Luckily, this part is relatively inexpensive to replace.

You’ll need to order the specific part for your brand and replace it once it arrives. When replacing this part or any part of your dryer, make sure to unplug it, and as an extra precaution, turn the breaker off in this area. Then, once you open the dryer by unscrewing the part that houses this piece, replacing it will be as simple as pulling off the old, damaged part and putting the new one in its place.

Dryer Won’t Cut On – Blown Thermal Fuse

Another common problem you may encounter that causes your clothes dryer not to work properly is that your dryer has a blown thermal fuse. When this happens, the dryer won’t cut on, or if it does, the heat won’t blow through the dryer.

Unlike the door switch, this is associated with the heating element. This tends to go bad because the heat from the dryer isn’t correctly going through the exhaust pipe, causing the dryer to overheat. While this is an easy fix, ensure you properly ventilate the area so that this won’t happen again.

How to Fix It

You will have to order the part that is right for your particular clothes dryer. This part is typically located at the back of the dryer. Once you open the dryer, start by taking photos of the part with your phone camera. This is so that when you replace the new part, you ensure that you put the right plugs back in the right part of the thermal fuse. Fixing either of these two common issues with your dryer should have it back up and running in no time.

Signs It’s Time To Get a New Clothes Dryer

Not all dryers stop cold. Sometimes they show signs that they are going bad. Again, just because it shows signs it’s going bad doesn’t mean you need to replace it. You may just need to repair it. However, some repairs may be so expensive that you may as well buy a new dryer. Here are tell-tale signs that you should avoid repairs and purchase a new dryer.

● Your dryer is over ten years old
● It makes a lot of noise whenever you run it.
● You’ve made many repairs, but the clothes are still not drying as they should.
● The drum inside the dryer no longer turns.
● Strange odors are coming from the dryer, such as mechanical burning or something else foul.
● It doesn’t heat any longer.
● A maintenance person recommends it.

These are some signs you need to replace your dryer. However, you don’t always have to wait for them to get old or worn to replace. If you just want to replace your clothes dryer with one that is more to your liking or has better energy efficiency, the choice is up to you. If you have the budget, go for it. Also, consider selling the one you own through a garage sale or online marketplace to recoup some of your expenses for the new one.

Why DIY Appliance Repair Might Not be Your Best Bet

As you stand there, fixated on your unresponsive dishwasher or squinting at your washing machine like a complex puzzle, an appliance repair company in your friendly neighborhood kindly suggests considering an alternative approach. It may be time to set aside the tools and reach for the phone instead.

Now, let’s clarify something. The DIY spirit is truly magnificent. It whispers encouragingly, “You have the ability to assemble that IKEA bookshelf.” It proclaims boldly, “Feel free to unclog that drain!” However, when it comes to complex appliance repair tasks, this enthusiastic spirit may not always be your best companion. Allow me to explain why.

Knowledge and Experience Matter

Appliance repair goes beyond simply removing screws and hoping for the best. It involves comprehending the intricate systems that drive our everyday machines. Each dishwasher, washing machine, oven, and stove possesses its own unique characteristics and complexities. Technicians specializing in affordable appliance repair services have devoted years to mastering the intricacies of these devices. They resemble detectives within the realm of appliances – trust me, having Sherlock Holmes on your team is far preferable to Inspector Gadget!

Safety First

In school, we were frequently reminded not to toy with electricity. It turns out that this admonition had some merit. Many do-it-yourself repairs involve working with electrical components, which can result in severe accidents if mishandled. Unless you happen to be a certified electrician who moonlights as a superhero it’s generally wiser to entrust electrical repairs in appliances to professionals.

Saving Time and Avoiding Frustration

Your time is precious. Between work, family, and that really gripping novel you can’t put down, do you really want to spend your weekend wrestling with a washing machine? By opting for professional appliance repair, you’re buying peace of mind, more leisure time, and let’s be real, a lot less cursing at inanimate objects.

It Can Actually Save Money

In the realm of appliance repairs, it may seem contradictory at first, but I implore you to lend an ear. Opting for a do-it-yourself approach entails the inherent risk of inadvertently damaging a component, which could result in even costlier repairs down the road. Alternatively, you might mistakenly identify the issue and replace a perfectly functional part, only to realize later that another culprit existed.

On the other hand, affordable appliance repair services boast adept technicians who possess the ability to accurately diagnose and rectify problems, potentially rescuing you from expensive mishaps. Bear in mind that just because one has the capacity to undertake a task does not always necessitate doing so.

Longevity of Your Appliances

When you entrust your dishwasher repair, washing machine repair, or oven and stove repair to a professional, you are making an investment in the longevity of your appliances. A properly repaired appliance can continue serving you faithfully for years. However, if you attempt a DIY fix that goes awry, it could significantly shorten the lifespan of your appliance. What might have been a simple solution turns into an early retirement party for your trusted companion.

By relying on the expertise of a professional technician, you ensure that your appliances receive the care they deserve.

Next time an individual confronts a malfunctioning appliance, they should pause and ponder: could opting for professional assistance be the wiser choice? It is worth remembering that a helpful, reliable, and reasonably priced appliance repair service is merely a call away.

Talk to Affordable Appliance Repair in West Michigan

If you’re considering fixing an old or malfunctioning appliance on your own, reach out to Affordable Appliance Repair first. Having expert advice will save you time and money, keep you safe, as well as help you make a smart investment if you need to replace an appliance.
