As a member of the advisory board for the Broadway Bound Theatre Festival, I encourage playwrights at all levels to submit their work to our festival. What sets us apart from other festivals is our commitment to helping playwrights develop their plays or musicals while they are accepted. We focus on actively listening to what the writers have to say, providing insightful feedback, and guiding them to achieve a stronger presentation from the moment we receive their submission. For more information, please follow this link. Submissions are open on New Year's Day, January 1, 2026.

We just completed a week-long workshop of "Well Preserved" in London with Broadway and West End director Mark Bell and his amazing cast. During the workshop, we engaged in games, improvisations, and, of course, rewrites. We have one more week left before we present highlights of the play to the producers in London next Friday. The workshop was intense, as we worked from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for six days last week. Now, with four more days to go, it's almost showtime!

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Sparkle on Stage in Freeport, Long Island, and its talented emerging thespians for their outstanding performance in my children's play, "Tooth," last week. The artistic director called me on stage and introduced me to the cast as the playwright. It was a pure delight to see the surprised looks on their faces.

Behind the junior cast, I had the pleasure of standing with Freeport's Mayor Robert T. Kennedy and Artistic Director Robyn Workman.

In a world designed for standing ovations and flawless performances, "The Anxiety of Laughing" boldly asks: What does it truly mean to keep dreaming when life alters the choreography of one's life?

At The Comedy Cathedral, the spotlight is firmly on Joey, a courageous stand-up comic with cerebral palsy, as he delivers a heartfelt eulogy for his mother, Stacey—a revered performer who insisted that her funeral take place at the club that served as her second home. In an emotional blend of laughter and sorrow, Joey stands at a pivotal crossroads of legacy and ambition, grappling with the challenge of stepping into a headliner role while mourning the powerful woman who raised, inspired, and pushed him to his limits.

Simultaneously, Leah—Joey's fiercely ambitious girlfriend and a dedicated ballet soloist—is on the cusp of achieving her dream of becoming a principal dancer. But a tragic accident on the very night of her long-awaited promotion leaves her paralyzed, forcing both Leah and Joey to confront and redefine the future they had so carefully crafted together.

You're invited to a free staged reading of "The Anxiety of Laughing" by Andrew Justvig. It is one of the plays we are proud to present and share with you in its development.

The reading is free and will take place on Saturday, July 12, at 1 pm in the studio of The Theater Center, located at 210 W 50th St, 3rd Floor, New York, NY 10019 (between 8th Avenue and Broadway). Please RSVP https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1z91EslMS-ZED2Njj5h7e7IRg4llQ7VLfrGeBNeKgNIU/edit

TWO MORE DAYS
Just about wrapping up its four weeks of new plays in the Broadway Bound Theatre (Annual) Festival at Powerhouse Theatre in Waverly Park, CT, Co-founders Lenore Skomal (Director) and Rick Sayers (General Manager) have made their new location a success. Playwrights around the country have participated and reaped the benefits of having their developing scripts workshopped before appearing on stage and receiving regular information packets with access to their interactive online forum. Lenore and Rick see to it that each playwright gets their personal attention and provides them with an audience talk back.
The Festival runs until September 1st. (broadwayboundfest.com)

Last night, Festival director Lenore Skomal sat with playwright Karl O'Brian Williams for a talkback from the audience about his play, "Project Sankofa."

REVISITING THY PLAY
In my dramatic writing class at New York University, the professor pointed out that lines in a dialogue should be clearly understood if the author wants the actor to convey his or her message correctly. To illustrate his point, he told us of a well-known playwright who had one of his earlier plays revived at an off-Broadway theatre. Out of courtesy and respect, the director invited him to participate in the first few rehearsals. When reading the script together, an actor had difficulty interpreting a line in one scene. The playwright looked at the line, tried to fathom the problem she was having for a couple of minutes, and then said, “My dear. When I wrote this line, God and I knew exactly what it meant. Now, only God knows.”
