Print 101: Let's talk about Shade! 🎨

Today we’re breaking down the subtle variations that make every color unique. Shade refers to a color, especially with regard to how light or dark it is or as distinguished from one nearly like it.

From light yellow-golds like Amber down to rich, dark tones like Dijon, understanding shade variations ensures your printed pieces hit the exact tonal balance you designed. Keep following along as we explore more key color terms!

Today we're exploring another fundamental element of color theory: Saturation.

Simply put, saturation refers to the vividness of a color. High saturation gives you bright, vivid, and pure hues, while lower saturation moves toward muted, dull, or grayish tones. Balancing saturation is key to making artwork feel dynamic without over-saturating ink layers or sacrificing shadow detail.

Print 101: Welcome to the Color Section! 🎨

Today we’re starting a brand-new chapter in our series! One of the biggest challenges in print is ensuring the final piece matches your original design.

Because monitors display color using emitted light while paper reflects light, translating a design from screen to print involves a shift in color models. Understanding these basics helps eliminate surprises and ensures your final printed piece pops just the way you intended. Follow along as we explore RGB, CMYK, spot colors, and more!

Print 101: Let's talk about Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)!

VOCs are organic compounds historically used in solvents, drying agents, and press washes.

While petroleum-derived chemicals contributed heavily to industry emissions in the past, modern eco-conscious shops (like us!) actively utilize low-VOC formulations and plant-based alternatives to protect both press operators and the environment. Stay tuned, next week we start diving into Color!

Today’s Print 101 focus is on fluid mechanics: Viscosity. 💧

Viscosity refers to the thinness or thickness of a fluid as measured by its resistance to flow. In press operations, ink viscosity is carefully modified so it retains proper flow through the ink tray and transfers cleanly onto paper. Different printing methods demand wildly different viscosities, from thin, water-like inkjet inks up to thick, paste-like offset inks.

Next week we finish up ink-related terms before diving into the Color section!

Print 101: Let's talk about Solids! ⬛

Today we’re breaking down total ink coverage versus screen tints. In press terminology, a "solid" is an area of the sheet acquiring 100% ink coverage, unlike a screen tint.

Where screen tints use halftone patterns to achieve lighter tones, a solid coat lays down pure, unbroken ink to give you maximum color saturation and impact. Keep following along as we break down more core print concepts!

Print 101: Let's talk about Ink Coverage!

Today we’re breaking down how much ink actually hits the sheet during production. Coverage describes the extent to which ink covers the surface of a substrate, usually referred to as light, medium, or heavy.

From simple letterheads with 5% coverage to image-dense pieces reaching 80% or more, calculating ink density plays a big role in drying times, press settings, and finishing! Keep following along as we break down more core print concepts.
