After the announced launch of The Craftsman's Hide Tanning Manual yesterday, we've been overwhelmed by the responses in our direct messages, texts, and comments - all interested in a copy!

Here is the link to pre-order the book, it will be available in print, and PDF versions. This will help gauge how many we need to print in our initial order.

The print version will be available for purchase on July 30th at the Minnesota Trapper Association Convention, with shipped orders being mailed afterwards. The PDF version will be available for purchase sometime after that.

You will be notified by email to purchase the book, and pricing is still pending printing and logistical costs.

Introducing The Craftsman's Hide Tanning Manual – Garment Tan Edition.

After years of developing and refining my own processes, I've compiled them into a practical shop manual for the craftsman who wants top-quality furs out of their own shop and wants to understand the tanning process, not just follow directions.

Each step is explained with the "why" behind it. This isn't a recipe collection or a compilation of folklore. It is a working reference to be kept in the shop and be returned to time and again.

The appendices include complete formularies for several commercial tanning systems that I personally use in my own shop.

This has been a working document for myself that has been added to, and subtracted from for years. Every time I learned something new, or refined my process I amended it. I've delayed hitting the publish button on it for so long, because I am always learning something new, and always making changes.

Eventually, I realized I'll never truly be done writing it. There will always be something new to learn, test, refine, and share. At some point I had to stop editing and publish it. Future editions may follow.

I hope this will become a useful resource to the many who are interested in this craft.

We're in the final formatting stages and will be launching officially at the Minnesota Trappers Association Convention this July!

More details to come.

There's just something about it all coming together.

Blake, you asked for a video on how I set my guards and blade. This seems to work for me.

Our trubond 1000B paint on tan, beaver experiment is finished up.

Overall, this is a solid tan and easy to use. I do think it's a little more dense and has less stretch and plush feel than my normal process. I dont think it would have been as forgiving had I left this beaver a little thicker.

Although the leather characteristics are a function of the tanning agent, good results are primarily driven through a good understanding of the process, and being able to adapt the process to the skin itself.

Slowed her down to 15 RPM, have options for swapping pulleys if needed. Just waiting on my order of media to arrive. Have a batch of beavers staked and ready for polishing...
