WHAT IS VECTOR ART & WHY DO SIGN SHOPS ASK FOR IT? 🤔
One of the most common things we hear is:
“But I already have my logo saved as a PDF/JPG/PNG…”
Unfortunately, that does NOT always mean the artwork is usable for signs, banners, apparel, decals, or large-format printing. So let’s break it down in simple terms 👇
🔹 WHAT IS VECTOR ART?
Vector art is artwork created using lines, shapes, and curves instead of tiny pixels.
That means it can be resized BIG or small without getting blurry, fuzzy, jagged, or distorted.
Think of vector art like:
✅ A perfect digital blueprint
Instead of:
❌ A screenshot or photo
🔹 WHY DO SIGN SHOPS NEED VECTOR ART?
In the sign and graphics industry, we often need to:
• Print large banners
• Cut vinyl decals
• Make signs
• Create vehicle graphics
• Print apparel
• Resize logos
If your artwork is low quality, blurry, or pixelated, the final product will be too.
A tiny blurry Facebook logo might look “okay” on your phone…
…but when enlarged to a 4-foot sign, it can look terrible.
Vector art allows us to:
✔ Scale artwork to ANY size
✔ Keep lines crisp and clean
✔ Produce professional quality prints
✔ Cut vinyl accurately
✔ Maintain sharp logos and text
🔹 VECTOR FILE TYPES:
These are TRUE vector file formats:
✅ .AI (Adobe Illustrator)
✅ .EPS
✅ .SVG
✅ .PDF (ONLY if originally created as vector artwork)
✅ .CDR (CorelDRAW)
🔹 NON-VECTOR FILE TYPES:
These are pixel/raster image files:
❌ .JPG / .JPEG
❌ .PNG
❌ .GIF
❌ Screenshots
❌ Photos from Facebook/Google
❌ Images pulled from websites
These files are made of pixels, which means they lose quality when enlarged.
⚠ IMPORTANT:
Changing a file extension does NOT magically make artwork vector.
For example:
❌ Saving a blurry JPG as a PDF
❌ Exporting a PNG into an AI file
❌ Taking a screenshot of a logo
DOES NOT create vector artwork.
If the original art was low quality…
…it will STILL be low quality — just with a different file extension.
That’s like printing a blurry photo on nicer paper.
The blur is still there.
🔹 HOW DO YOU GET VECTOR ART?
There are a few ways:
1️⃣ Have your logo professionally designed in vector format from the beginning.
2️⃣ Ask your designer for the original vector files.
3️⃣ Have a sign shop or graphic designer recreate/redraw your artwork into vector format $$
