Themed environments change over time, but the artists and craftspeople behind them deserve to be remembered.
The late Garnett Hathaway was an exquisite sculptor and one of the artists ThemeWorks was fortunate to work with during an era when much of this work began with hand drawings, clay maquettes, blocks of foam, and the sculptor’s eye and hands.
Long before digital modeling and CNC became commonplace, Garnett had the remarkable ability to take a drawing or small clay study and translate it into monumental sculpture with character, proportion, and life.
Her work included a monumental Poseidon figure for a themed retail environment, sculptural elements for a New York streetscape, and, at SeaWorld Orlando, the extensive sculpted seawall surrounding the water features at Journey to Atlantis, where she served as lead sculptor.
In our industry, confidentiality requirements often mean that the artists and craftspeople behind the work can’t publicly associate themselves with the projects they helped create. As a result, millions of people may experience their work without ever knowing who made it.
Garnett was one of those remarkable people.
We remember her not only for the work she left behind, but for the extraordinary talent, judgment, and craftsmanship she brought to it.
