Is the argument sound? Do ideas build logically? Are sections in the right order?

✍️ Line Editing = Clarity & voice (1–2 weeks)
Is every sentence doing its job? Is the tone consistent, polished, and engaging?

✔️ Copy Editing = Grammar & precision (3–7 days) Grammar, punctuation, usage, consistency, basic fact-checking

🔍 Proofreading = Final polish (1–3 days)
Catching last errors after the text is fully finalized

A Common Misstep

Requesting proofreading when deeper structural or clarity issues are still unresolved—then feeling frustrated when the piece still doesn’t work.

Most projects move through all four stages of editing. Just not at the same time.

If your opening and conclusion don’t align, start with developmental editing.
If you’re still revising content, it’s too early for proofreading.
