I have had mixed feelings about AI. However, after listening to Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, at Epic UGM last week, I realize that this is due to my lack of knowledge and when in the right hands, AI is a powerful tool for many industries.
Epic and Microsoft have some exciting collaborations together to aid in clincal efficiencies and patient experience and Satya has a mindful vision on the ex*****on of AI throught Microsoft.
Example: Epic can now ambiently summarize information of a clinical examination. Now, the clinician can focus more on direct patient care rather than the indirect administrative tasks that take more time than seeing patients.
Satya also discussed how AI utilizes natural language interfaces. No longer is the user restricted by things like the mouse and keyboard. He said in Microsoft design, "The human is always in the loop and you design around the human." This approach is a foundational change in what people experience in productivity gains. Now, AI will execute what the human is already doing rather than the human adapting to the program or the machine.
This AI discussion left me with more knowledge on the why and the how and Satya provided a sense of comfort when he discussed that Microsoft's approach to AI is: "Accuracy, ethics, and fairness." He calls this "Responsible AI" and states, "Any AI model deployed has AI safety with principles, standards, governance, and oversight. There is a clear understanding on what the data is used for and the subsequent guarantees of the product. In addition, there is an operational security posture that helps you protect against cyber attack risk both with detection and to stop propagation when attacks occur.
After this session, I am excited and encouraged by the possibilities of AI and the securites in place to protect the power that it withholds. Not to mention, it is impressive to see the collaboration between two significant technology companies and I see many possibilities that will aid in improving healthcare for both the clinician and the patient.
