Got a retaining wall that's leaning, bulging, or leaking dirt at the bottom? Here's what's usually behind it: water.

Our red clay holds water like a sponge. After a wet week, all that water pushes on the back of the wall, and then it freezes and thaws all winter. On old tie walls the wet wood rots too. If a screwdriver sinks into the ties, the wall is next.

Here's how we build ours so the water has a way out. This one near Gainesboro is a 12-by-8 wall, about 8 feet tall, made of one-ton Redi-Rock® blocks set with our excavator. Behind it is clean #57 stone all the way up to the last foot, wrapped in filter fabric, with a 4-inch drain run out to daylight. Less than a week on site. In the video I walk you around it and up on top.

Two weeks ago this was a raw bank of red clay, about 8 feet tall, right against a walkout basement door in Jackson County. Nothing was holding it, and water stood in the low spot. A clay cut like that washes down a little more with every hard rain.

We dug down and compacted a crushed-stone pad under the whole wall. Then our excavator set Redi-Rock® blocks, about a ton apiece: an L-shaped gravity wall wrapping the corner beside the basement door, 12 feet on one leg and 8 feet on the other, about 8 feet tall. It stands on its own weight, with no reinforcing fabric buried back into the yard.

Behind it, full height, is clean #57 stone wrapped in filter fabric, and a 4-inch perforated drain at the base runs to daylight. Water piling up behind a wall is what makes walls lean and fall, so we give the water a way out. Less than a week on site, including cleanup and grading.

There were several leaning trees, unfinished roof drains, eroded areas that didn't allow grass to grow.

You finally found your spot. Then the excavator hit rock.
