Interesting article right here. Make sure you read the last sentence… “Focus on nutrition and age structure…” That’s why we use NXT Level Deer Supplements so we do our part with the nutrition to Let’em Grow!! Then it takes patience and management to make sure the age structure part can be achieved. It’s not about show up and shoot, it’s about the process of getting these deer to their potential. Let me know if you would like to get some feed or mineral to help your deer herd.
Are yearling spikes genetically inferior?
Here are the yearling antlers off of one ranch, one year during our landmark study, entitled “Juvenile-to-Adult Antler Development in White-Tailed Deer in South Texas” it was co-authored by Doc and his close friend and colleague, Ben Koerth.
We captured almost 10,000 wild bucks and tagged them on several South Texas ranches, over many years, where deer management is intense! Bucks were tagged either as buck fawns or yearlings so we knew their actual age. Later, we obtained antler measurements at various ages from tagged bucks we either recaptured or were killed by hunters.
In this photo of yearling bucks from one ranch, one year, where would you draw the line on culling? Difficult decision isn’t it?
We found out that, by the time bucks matured, there was no statistical difference between those captured as spikes and ones with branched antlers! We published this work in the Journal of Wildlife Management, which created quite a stir among professional biologists supporting the spike culling theory! They even published a counter argument against our paper— something unheard of! This resulted in an unprecedented opportunity for us to reveal in a follow up paper how a previous study had seriously biased their work!
This led to total silence on the issue! Later studies corroborated our results! Bottom line? There is never an excuse to cull yearling bucks to improve antler size!
Focus on nutrition and age structure instead!
