I know when I was an IT salesman there was nothing that could stop me. I was a client rep for IBM. I had overall account responsibility. My accounts made up $30M in company revenue. Life was good. I was rolling in it and spending what I made.
Then I got a new job…on purpose.
I wanted to push myself and wanted to make even more money. Then the market bottom fell out and the music stopped. I was left without a chair.
I was dealt a setback.
From there I was able to land another selling position, but it wasn’t the same. I was the direct seller. Then, on March 4, 2011 I went blind.
Another setback.
For the first six months my wife drove me to all of my sales calls. She would wait in the parking lot until I got out of my meeting. Have you had to rely on someone else for common activities?
The next five years were made of me going from company to company trying to sell my wares. It never felt right.
During one of my stints I made a $100K mistake on a $300K proposal…in my favor. The customer had already grown weary of my ineptitude. He was livid. This broke the camel’s back. I was fired.
Another setback.
I know what it means to have confidence. I know what it means to lose confidence.
